Bus Driver Whose Bible Supposedly Stopped Two Bullets Made the Whole Thing Up

Who'da thought it? via Terry Firma at Friendly Atheist

... the Dayton, Ohio public-bus driver who, in February, was assaulted by three teenagers? Rickey Wagoner‘s assailants supposedly fired three shots at him, point blank, and stabbed him for good measure. The story made national news because Wagoner told everyone his survival was a bona fide miracle: two bullets aimed at his chest never penetrated the Bible that he happened to carry there. Praise the Lord!

Just like the bulk of the stories in Wagoner’s favorite book, his account of the attack turns out to have been nothing but a fanciful fabrication (I guess the man doesn’t believe in the Biblical commandment that prohibits bearing false witness).

From the Dayton Daily News
A video and audio recording of the incident by a device aboard the bus showed Wagoner had only 22 seconds to disarm two of the assailants, stab one of them with his own pen knife, fire at them with the bullets remaining in the handgun he said he had wrestled away from one of men, and travel 200 to 300 feet to get back on his bus.

/snip

Police ballistics tests showed that bullets fired from the handgun - a 25-caliber Raven model semiautomatic- at the same distance as had been fired at Wagoner’s book penetrated the book and traveled 15 inches through a gel designed to simulate the effect of bullets on a human body. Wagoner’s shirt after the incident had bullet holes in the front, but not the back.

/snip

Biehl also said Wagoner’s injuries were not consistent with defensive wounds, but were consistent with hesitation wounds. Alongside a deeper wound were shallower, smaller cuts. The knife Wagoner said he used to stab one assailant was never recovered for the police investigation.

From the same article Dayton Regional Transport Executive Regional Director (Mark Donaghy) said
“After conducting a comprehensive investigation that has spanned nearly four months, the police department has concluded Mr. Wagoner fabricated his statements. All of us at RTA are angry at the thought that an employee would allegedly mislead the police, the public and us and use ugly racial stereotypes in doing so.”

Oh, and the book was not a Bible anyway but The Message Bible, a sort of Reader's Digest abbreviation

the bolt spread out all around me and saved me. I could tell it was the bible.

Another time, I was playing on the rail road tracks when a train came by and hit me. Luckily, my bible was in my front pocket, and stopped the train instantaneously, saving me from injury.

And finally, there was a gang of black muslin terrorists from Kenya who brought machetes and attacked my home in the middle of the night. You could not believe how fast and effective the Bible was in stopping them all.

RussBLib did nothing more than express an opinion that one would expect to see in the Atheists and Agnostics group. Clearly some asshat with a raging hate-boner for us Godless heathens came here looking to be offended, found what s/he wanted, and alerted.

But hey, they're the oh-so-fucking-wonderful liberal religious, who are filled with God's love and whom we should consider oh-so-fucking wonderful too, and fuck us if we don't.

Well, I do, here.

I'm sure the alert trolls feel as if they're doing their sky fairy's work when they alert on posts here in our....(ahem)... "safe haven," and that so do the likeminded jurors who vote to hide posts here that offend them.

They can't abide that actual discussions go on here, and that their safe haven is basically a one man ghost town. If they could possibly be more petty and juvenile, I'm not sure how.

Looks like what we need in here is our own SMERSH. And I bet some of the 1st Dunning-Kruger Chairborne Division will now - or after they rise from their fainting couches, anyway - alert on this as a death threat.
