(725 posts)I chose the alcohol one, because I think it's a great way of thinking about both religion and other toxic materials in this world.

(9,356 posts)Because I think more people need to be reminded of that. Even though, in this group - to use the worst metaphor possible - it's probably preaching to the choir.
"Alcohol" was a very close second.

(18,219 posts)That reason is that it says "I don't want to make it illegal". It seems that too many religious people believe that we want to stop them from practicing their religion, and it has to be repeated that this is not the issue.
But I really wanted to go with "We have pi" because I have always been a little nerdy, and I love pie/pi.

(5,349 posts)But I chose the religion / alcohol analogy.
In retrospect I think maybe I should've chosen #1. There are a lot of people who don't seem to get that.

(725 posts)proabably don't get the nature of the difference between a linear and a quadratic equation, they see the world as black, white, or grey.

I would add that overindulgence can lead to making an ass of one's self.

(468 posts)1 makes a good point but it is really just a semantics game. I prefer to leave the semantics games to the apologists. We have actual substance to work with.
Thus we have 2 and 3. I'll only ever consider the pi option if I really don't like any of the others.
2 is a historical correction. Definitely important.
3 is a very good summary of what my goals are when I participate in atheist activism. It also uses an analogy that is simultaneously accurate, entertaining (for us), easy to understand (even for the most obtuse) and is likely to enrage believers that do understand because of its accuracy and implication. For these reasons 3 wins for me.
