South Dakota Democratic Party's treasurer retires as finances head into the negative

The South Dakota Democratic Party's treasurer is out, and its finances are in the red.

The SDDP ended August with negative $9,860 in cash on hand and $46,864 in debt, according to the party's monthly report filed on Friday evening with the Federal Elections Commission. The party received $17,539 in donations during August and disbursed $30,580 for items such as salaries and operational expenses.

Bill Nibbelink announced his retirement as the SDDP's treasurer to the party's central committee on Monday after serving in the position since 2000. SDDP Chair Paula Hawks will serve as the party's interim treasurer until the central committee elects a new treasurer on Saturday, according to SDDP Executive Director Stacey Burnette.

The FEC is wrapping up an audit of the state party's 2015-2016 election cycle finances, and the SDDP has started submitting amended monthly reports for 2019 to correct errors found by the FEC in the party's financial reporting this year. In August, SDDP leadership decided to close the party's offices in Sioux Falls and Rapid City due to dwindling funds, leaving the party without a physical presence in the state.

It would be nice if some of our presidential candidates went to South Dakota to do some fundraising for the party.
