Treasury of Natural Perfection - Longchen Rabjampa

These are essential, definitive teachings beyond pith instructions. This is a display of Atiyoga, the apex approach, all in itself.

For those who are experienced mediators, it can be quite a boon that opens effortlessly into timeless self-liberation. At the point of authoring this teaching, Longchenpa had already traversed the entire spectrum of practice and Dzogchen, but this does not imply that everyone must, (except for the enhancements available) since, as he said, it is already accomplished. There is no need to repeat what has already been done.

This is a reading from Keith Dowman's first edition of the translation entitled, An Old Man Basking in the Sun. There is an updated version called Natural Perfection that includes some significant and noteworthy changes, (he no longer uses the word Gnostic, which imposed some obvious problems). Translating this kind of teaching requires care, finesse and is probably an ongoing process. It is very deep and visionary. Also, Downman's commentaries are very insightful and contemporary in regards to questions and clarifications you might require, so the book is highly recommend for reference. It is traditional to have a direct introduction, (pointing out instructions) from a master. However, this could be your pointing out, or not. Consult a master on that, though.

The disclaimer is don't enter into this teaching if you feel it is not for you. If you hold extreme views or have other issues, it may not be for you as this is what is called definitive in contrast to provisional. In most cases, I feel that it is fine to try it and see for yourself. In the West we have a tendency to allow biases to obscure or distract us, (and that allows for self-censoring) so you will find that out in this case by having a listen. It can be either a seed planted for a time to come, or for some, a wide open doorway beyond striving. If you have a teacher you are deeply involved with, it may be best to inquire first if you should be delving into the apex approach and go with that advice first and foremost.

Another point to make here is that this teaching does not mean you have to give up or retain any practices you are currently doing. It is not meant to be a prescription or determination of what is essentially sameness. Though radical Dzogchen is essentially simple and to the point, the main practice is to recognize your true nature, become certain of it and abide there, (see: The Three Golden Letters). Practicing shamata & vipassana are good preparation for receiving this transmission and the combination is called Shine in Tibetan Tantra. However, they do not induce or bring on the natural state, which is a common misconception.

You can sit comfortably in the lotus position if you like, with your hands laid loosely on your knees. Do nothing at all, is the best advice, however you can do your regular meditation(s) first to relax and rest first and I also recommend the practice of merging the mind with space initially and oscillating between that and turning awareness in on itself, (try to be aware of the source of your awareness). As you sit and rest, you can have your eyes half-open, (a gentle squint) and focus on the space between your eyes and the wall.

Also, it is best not to make any guesses or assumptions or adopt any kind of certain view about what your natural condition is. That could lead to a diversion and wrong views and that is a very important caveat to consider. Just let it be what it is and allow experience and deep intuition of the non-conceptual to be self-revealing. Just let it be. Hang loosely and rest freely in the Dharmadatu in the now.

For those with interest or who are sparked, there is plenty of information online and many videos on YouTube. However, keep it utterly simple if you can and let the solvent just sink in. Simply being!

[Much thanks to Samaneri Jayasara for her most excellent readings and the quality of her recordings.)

This can be quite an effective and interesting retreat:
