Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) revived Rinkai Buddhism in Japan because his roots never left him. Indeed, he was a holy Buddhist preacher who connected easily to ordinary people. Therefore, he understood the complexity of Buddhism in the countryside and the importance of local Shintoism.

Got this link from Tim Shorrock's twitter thread. Tim's father was a Christian missionary. So Tim spent his childhood years in Japan and later Korea. One is readily captivated by the Japanese paintings and intrigued by the koans of the Zen masters. Go to the link above to see examples the wonderful Zen style of art which captures the essence of the subject viewed with a deceptive economy of effort.

The Rinzai school (臨済宗; Japanese: Rinzai-shū, simplified Chinese: 临济宗; traditional Chinese: 臨濟宗; pinyin: Línjì zōng) is one of three sects of Zen in Japanese Buddhism (with Sōtō and Ōbaku being the others).
