2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf your congress critter is a Republican, tell us what makes that person very special:
Mine is "Light bulb Lady" Anne Buerkle:
The new congresswoman says it should be up to consumers to decide if they want to buy the standard incandescent bulb invented by Thomas Edison 130 years ago, or the new generation of energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs.
As Buerkle views it, Congress took away that choice in 2007 when it passed the Energy Independence and Security Act legislation signed into law during the George W. Bush administration. The law included energy efficiency standards for light bulbs, to be phased in beginning Jan. 1, 2012. Incandescent bulbs currently fail to meet the standards.
Buerkle, R-Onondaga Hill, says the law amounts to a ban on incandescent bulbs. She and 20 other conservative Republicans in Congress are seeking to repeal the new standards.

(12,754 posts)Her special talent is being a waitress who married her boss -- Sonny Bono -- and her husband/boss couldn't ski very well.
So, she lives off the millions in income from his music, got herself appointed to his seat, and every election gets the support of the corporations who she votes in favor of every time. She finally re-married and then re-married again to Connie Mack, right wing hack from FL.
A Citizens United-inspired group is already running nasty, vile attack ads against her opponent this year. It's win-win for Mary, she has this guy savaged night after night on TV and she can claim she's running a "positive" campaign. The ads state that it's not supported by any candidate or party -- just by some shadowy anonymous group.

(10,745 posts)Didn't know much about him, but I guess I'm not too surprised to hear about this.
Ralph Hall's my representative now. He doesn't seem to be too bad, though IS a member of the Teabagger Caucus, sad to say, so I can't say for sure.

(4,422 posts)Steve Southerland. He defeated my blue dog Allen Boyd in the 2010 teabagger challenge. He previously worked as a funeral director, having taken over his family's business and so, of course, his signature bill was something to benefit his own industry to do with Medicare death benefits.
His most recent claim to fame was being in on the Sea of Galilee skinny-dip party along with his daughter who some say is a teenager but I don't know (or care) if that's true.
He is being challenged by Al Lawson (D) who is doing well with support and fund raising. Our district was just redrawn making it a bit bluer than before, and that's true blue, not dog blue like my county.
Southerland is not getting much press or exposure in this district lately. I think that means something GOOD.

I can't find anything that makes her special.
I also can't find anything she's done in her two years in Congress.

(1,560 posts)Opposes my right to visit my family in Cuba, which in and of itself is enough to make me never vote for any candidate who holds that view, and is pretty much down the line on every other GOP position, except immigration, which helps her win the district by winning over Hispanics who otherwise wouldn't vote for her. Thankfully i've been gerrymandered into a solid Dem district starting in January.

(36,286 posts)will people in a new district be more willing to vote for a Democratic candidate?

(1,560 posts)in terms of Ds and Rs, right now its R+3, although Obama did win it in 08 by about 2 points. Unfortunately she's still pretty popular down here in Miami, mainly because she supports immigration reform and has the backing of most Cuban-American voters (myself not included, of course). The one district where things could go our way is the newly drawn 26th, which is basically the western Miami suburbs. The Democratic challenger, Joe Garcia, has a 7 point lead over incumbent David Rivera in a PPP poll released just yesterday, and best of all Mr. Rivera is currently under federal investigation, which will hopefully make things all the more easier.
