Super delegates are not "up for grabs" on primary day, or counted any differently before or after.

A super delegate can declare his or her support at any time... before their states' primaries or after... and it can be changed right up to the day of the convention.

If you want to see what "theoretical" position your candidate has with Super Delegates, you can count every SD who has come out in support of a candidate regardless of whether or not their state has held a primary.

If you want to see "real" delegate counts (ones you can truly count on for the convention), you leave them out.

The idea of counting a state's super delegates once their state holds a primary has no relevance to anything. They don't suddenly become "real" on that day. They are as real--or not--as they were before.

And once they state their affiliation, they are unlikely to change regardless of how their state votes. However, they are likely to change if the total pledged delegates awarded from all states ends up favoring a different candidate. It is not about representing their state, it is about the total outcome.

The super delegates do not vote until the convention.

Just look at what happened in 2008 when the super delegates changed from Hillary to Obama at the convention.

I will say it louder to make sure you heard me....THE SUPER DELEGATES DO NOT VOTE UNTIL THE CONVENTION!

The super delegates shifted from Hillary to Obama in 2008 because Obama got the popular vote. Super Delegates do not defy the will of the people because there would be an outcry SO LARGE, if they did!

At the convention the super delegates will vote for whomever has the popular vote.

2008, Hillary's pledged super delegates went to Obama at the convention. I imagine if Bernie wins and Hills delegates don't go to him there will be hell to pay. And vice versa. I think democrats are at least smart enough to realize that.
You are correct that super delegates are not "up for grabs" on primary day, and they certainly should not count in the total until the convention.
