Before 2001, Muslim Americans of varying national/ethnic origin were one of the most staunchly Republican demographics in the country.

(1,021 posts)It is a demographic shift we are watching right now in our communities. And not just in our communities, actually, but across the board: wedge issues, for perhaps the first time, are no longer the major agenda item in the current primary cycle among a number of different voting blocs, but especially among younger people.
Incidentally, the argument could very easily be made that much of pre-2001 Muslim support for Republicans was largely an effort by a lot of FOB and first generation immigrants to demonstrate their "patriotism."

(2,707 posts)During the Democratic presidential TV debate in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday evening, Sanders expressed his desire to see the U.S. move as aggressively as we can to normalize relations with Iran. According to the Jewish Senator from Vermont, after the administration has managed to reach a nuclear agreement with the Iranian regime without going to war, the goal has got to be, as we have done with Cuba, to move in warm relations with a very powerful and important country in this world.
Sanders optimistically-driven tone towards Iran is in stark contrast to his rival, Hillary Clintons position, as she made a point to highlight Irans bad behavior on non-nuclear activity and its sponsor of terrorism in the region.

(73 posts)Arabs are all in for Bernie. You just need to get them to vote. The Arab voter turnout is higher than any other ethnicity and definitely higher than national average. You can do the same in IL, NJ, CA and NY where they can deliver a lot of votes.
My brother in Dearborn didn't want to vote, but I kept pushing him until he and his wife and her family went out and voted for Bernie.

(1,890 posts)Welcome to the our revolution! We proved tonight that by banding together we can overcome the staggering advantages of the establishment candidate. We just have to keep focused and not believe their lies or the tricks they use to divide us. Thank you again for your STRONG support. We noticed and we appreciate it. And by the way that support you gave us goes back out to you. It's not a one way street. We have your back too!

(11,605 posts)Which is what I hear from some of my fellow Jews when I express concern about the anti-Muslim hate mongering propagated by Trump and others like him.
I feel strongly that as Jews, given our own history of persecution, we ought to be the first to speak up against this kind of bigotry against any religious or ethnic group, regardless of any territorial or political disputes in other parts of the world. But sadly, some Jews don't see it that way, and they often make the excuse that Muslims are anti-Semitic. Putting aside the fact that that makes no sense semantically because technically Muslims are also Semites, I am glad to be armed with these pictures to help disprove that.

(10,164 posts)Voting for the person you think is the best choice, regardless of him being part of an ethnic group you're supposed to hate? To me, that's a big ol' buy-in to the principles of American democracy.
Yes I realize the cultural assimilation issue can be very, very real in some places. The fact that it seems to be far less of a problem here is something we can be proud of, though.
Mufaddal
(1,021 posts)First, many American Muslims are not foreigners or immigrants. There is, for instance, a very significant African American Muslim population. There are also many, many converts.
Second, many immigrant Muslims who came to the US did so out of both a pre-existing appreciation for American-style democracy, and the financial or other existing means to do make the trek. This is not an assimilation issue. The cultural diversity within Muslim communities in the US is still very strong, very vibrant, and constantly being refreshed by a steady trickle of new immigrants. I have never met a single foreign-born Muslim--or even first, or second-generation immigrant--who sees Americanism (however you want to define that) as something that needs to be "assimilated" into, rather than something that can happily coexist alongside our separate cultural and religious practices.
I wanted to point this out because I think many people are unaware of the actual structure, make-up, and diversity of the American Muslim faith community.
