On CNN, Van Jones made the point that a lot of the success of Trump and Sanders in Michigan is a response to the perception of bad trade deals that have cost jobs... and he pointed out that, in a Trump vs. Clinton contest in November, that could make things difficult for Clinton in the rust belt, as that is one issue that seems to cross party lines, and Hillary is--at least compared to her competitors--on the wrong side of it.
So there is some basis for the idea that Sanders would have a better chance winning these states than Hillary would, if either were up against Trump.

(16,685 posts)Trump could win in states like Michigan. Which is why everyone better hope like hell that we end up with a brokered Republican convention that denies it to Trump should Hillary end up winning the nomination.

(26,549 posts)The South is getting a lot of former rust belt manufacturing work.
The historical reason for the rust belt (raw materials shipped via the Great Lakes) is not nearly as strong a factor anymore. Mild winters in the South make it easier to keep the plant going, and A/C negates the heat and humidity problems of the summer. Toss in anti-union Republican governments, and a lot of jobs that don't leave the US have moved South.

(2,145 posts)CNN reporter just reported that ads claiming her deceitful claims about his vote on the auto bail out might be backfiring. I hope so. And Van Jones commented on home ownership among blacks in the north and how finally getting a home and then losing it again really dashed their hopes and dreams so they are more influenced by Bernie's message than in the south. I said on another thread the northern blacks may see things a little differently. I just wish the spread were wider. I really like Van Jones!
