2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSanders winning the Michigan primary is the biggest upset in decades. It's a political earthquake.
The Clinton era is over. The new generation coming of age wants nothing to do with them. And since the Democratic Party has always been about the future, we would be wise to listen to the young people. And we all know who the young people want - men and women, white and black and hispanic and asian. The young people want Bernie!

I would humbly suggest to you or Hillary supporters not to try to "educate ya"ll or spike the ball too hard when trashing/supporting the other team after each vote.
Neither Bernie nor Hillary has a snow ball's chances in hell w/out the support of each Bernie and Hillary supporters in the GE.
And please don't drag that old they are picking on my candidate. I have seen enough of that BS on DU from both sides. Just STOP it!
Congratulate the winner and support the final nominee.
I have already pledged to vote for the nominee, unlike many on this forum who "claim" to be dems who say they will refuse to vote unless their candidate wins.
Do you really want Trump or Cruze filling the next three Supreme Court Justices? May God help us all if you don't vote for the above reasons.

But now I have lost respect for him (not for supporting Hillary, but for his comments about being a super delegate), so I am not as upset that he got snubbed in 2009.

but proudly wore my "If I were 21, I'd vote for Kennedy" button. Now, Bernie's suing Ohio to try to make it possible for 17 year olds to vote. One who will be 18 at the time of the GE is supposed to be allowed to vote in Ohio, but the Secretary of State is trying to block them, having changed the law.
I've written here before that, though I'm not religious, it feels as though Bernie was sent at this time to help us clean up messes and get back on track. He's certainly spent his adult life preparing for this moment. Onward!

(119 posts)And Bernie still lost at the end of the day when the delegates were counted. I will vote for him if he gets the nomination, but get real.
Should Sanders get the Democratic nod, the news media will brutally trash him each and every day, every 30 minutes, calling him a variety of names related to his leftist friends in Central America. Right wingers are already calling him, "Sandersnista." The press will too. Look what they did to George McGovern, a war hero, no less.
We need to concentrate on getting Democrats elected to Congress! This is where real change will begin.

(12,228 posts)In a dry unexciting world where most bewildered unenthused Dems actually believe Clinton is the main choice. But suppressing and competing dishonestly will get you large blowouts. The lack of large blowouts as a thesis is as unreliable as the bevy of polling we have been suffering through for months on states where Clinton is outside her safe zone, unhappily in states the Dems can't carry in November.
By all means try to dampen the momentum. A firestorm or pressure cooker, bigger victories for Sanders are very possible.

(1,089 posts)you are correct. That said, I really can't remember a candidate being down 66-29 right before a vote and winning in a presidential vote of any kind. I could be wrong and have forgotten about one or more, but I think that's why the term 'upset' is being bandied about - based on most numbers going in, it really is shocking.

(30,247 posts)Even the campaign's internal polling had Hillary losing to Obama after his win in IA.
SDJay
(1,089 posts)but I'd be stunned if the polling was anywhere near 66-29 for Obama, as he was the upstart overall even though he had won Iowa.

(10,164 posts)I'm for Bernie, but it has to be acknowledged that Hillary retains the lead, and Bernie's path is still the more difficult of the two. Beacool

Yes, the delegate count favors Hillary. As per RCP, although 100% of the vote hasn't been counted, tonight Hillary earned 87 delegates and Sanders earned 69.

(4,753 posts)If you have not yet done so with success, please approach the older generations in your life and share with them how important Bernie is to you personally. Ask them to support and vote for Bernie for your sake, for your future's sake. I say 'with success' because I am asking you to reassess those relationships where your enthusiasm and requests fell on deaf ears in light of the following:
There is an old truism that says, "When the left & the right stop fighting each other and come together in common purpose, there is nothing we, the American people cannot accomplish!" (ok, I left out the part about tyrants falling).
Bernie's call to peaceful revolution is exactly this. It means there is common grievance among most Americans regarding their society, economy, and government. Most Americans agree on certain ideas, values, policies, and programs and Bernie's platform reflects many of these commonalities or points of intersection.
The revolution will formulate a saner nation from which we may lead the world by example instead of by bravado and bullying.
So, Bernie could use your help. Thanks.

One grandchild asked me sweetly why some grownups did not like SpongeBob. My son is married to a republic and they live in a red state (Tennessee). He called tonight after the Michigan results and said he voted for Bernie and was happy Bernie won. I told him I was proud of him. The reason I have acted like this is because when Bush stole the first election, I would go into a rabid rant if his name was mentioned, and drove semi-friends away. The debate likewise confirmed if elected, Senator Sanders will continue advocating for ideas, thoughts and legislative actions from the Executive Officer role, protecting People voting him into the role of President of the United States first, and not the interest of corporations.

(745 posts)Go Bernie!
I see some Hillary supporters have some apologies to make and perhaps they should take this as a lesson to not prognosticate to other DU users in the future.
I'm sorry, what did the polls say 2-3 days ago? Hillary +17? Have not the Bernie supports been talking about the unfair practices of the MSM and Camp Hillary? Yes, oh yes, let it take hold to those who 'believe' mainstream media is 'truth' -take notice -
We are tired of the same old same old. We see how obviously fake the 'big show' is. We want the old 'textbook' politics where bribes are illegal and the function of the government is to serve the common good and needs of the people. We expect new(old) ideas and the adoption of new technologies and infrastructure. Instead of being a world leader we are becoming a failed state, in exchange for enriching the greedy-rich 'owners' and power-brokers of the world.
I'm 33 years old so my political "awareness" started with Bush Sr. - then Clinton for 8 years, Bush for 8 years, Obama (Voted for him, very disappointed) for 8 years. I've been living my entire life under the same shit and it keeps getting worse. You think I want Bill Clinton's wife, now? For what, more of the same? People are sheep! Wake up god damn it! Use that fucking noodle in your head for 5 minutes to see what's been going on.
If you follow actual facts you see things. Things like Lawrence Lessig, Elizabeth Warren, Barney Frank and Bernie Sanders - it seems obvious, to me, that they were telling the truth when they said 'it' and 'it' has lead exactly to the places they warned about. I came to realize Bernie Sanders shortly after 9/11 - He was THE guy that was thinking like the rest of us.. What the F are we going to war for with no facts, no evidence and a story that still sucks eggs to this day? A true conspiracy of the highest order, IMO.
We see who was right. WE, the people ARE right when we overwhelming oppose legislation, yet our will is only enacted at a rate of something like 10%. Where's our legal WEED - I DEMAND IT, the facts are in, Just like we knew all along, like, duh! Why do we still have the failed War on Drugs? WTF Hillary Clinton supporters? You want MOAR of this crap? You want to feed the prison systems of which we all complain?
Bernie or Bust. This is it. Last chance. Real problems are here, like Climate Change and Oil dependence, Money in Politics, etc, etc.
You know what? I know Hillary would be "better" than Trump - but only better in the sense that we would continue kicking that tin-can just a little bit further down the road, a dead-end cul-de-sac. Then we can have Hillary tip our tin-can right up to the edge and let the weather do the rest for another 30-50 years. Fuck that. I almost rather see Trump get elected so that we can burn this [political] shit down now (Feel da BERN!). Then we can get started with fixing real shit and maybe my kids won't have to go through this, too. Otherwise, no chance anything changes. Need proof - look at Obama. The most spineless "Republican" Democrat ever. What got done? ACA? OK, weak-sauce as it sits, bent to shit by compromise so that it is literally a Republican plan. We didn't fix the systemic price collusion issues, drug prices, overseas drugs, premiums, single payer. WTF.
We have to fix the systemic corruption 'EVERYWHERE' and return the powers of the people, to the PEOPLE (and no, corps are not people, duh!?). There's one guy up there that says he's for YOU, at every turn. He sees the problems, just like YOU. He's been warning YOU for decades. That's the kind of politician I want. Give me Bernie or give us a big fuckup-reset/severe, quick deterioration with trump - a wake up call to not only the establishment and owners, but to the people as well. No more drawn-out mastermind plans, no more "frog in the pot", with our elite's hands on the burner controls. No more.
I can't take another 33 years of "the same" or worse. This planet can't take more decades of willful ignorance. The thought of a possible 8 years of Hillary makes me sick to my stomach.
Bernie is coming. Seriously you folks, Michigan is a win now, beating all expectations. The nay-sayers said it can't be done and the upcoming states aren't going to be so cut-and-dry for Hillary.
Want my opinion? We voted for Obama to help fix and battle our enemies within. We're going to do it again but this time I KNOW we are putting our best up for POTUS. GO BERNIE! WOOOO!

(1,979 posts)I do love Bernie, but I believe that Hillary will win. There will be moderate (yes they are out there) republicans and Independents, who will vote for her over Trump or Cruz because they will vote with their minds over their emotions.
I'll be watching. I want to see both Bernie and Hillary narrow their focus down on the key issues - women's rights, strengthening healthcare with a plan that will pass, tell me about infrastructure and how we are going to repair our crumbling roads and bridges. Tell me about how we are going to protect our land and trees, the water - how we are going to protect our fresh water from being purchased by the Koch brothers? Education - how are we going to ensure that our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to make a living? How will they afford to go to college? How will we keep good teachers if they do not earn enough to live? Where is the effort to stop the suppression of votes, stop the practice of gerrymandering behind closed doors, the influence of lobbyists? The dark money that allows extremists to place their pawns inside of our government in key positions? What will they do about the obstruction in the House and Senate? What about the multi-generational families and tax breaks for grandparents who are contributing to raising and supporting extended family? I could go on and on... I want more details on the plans. All the grand ideas in the world will not get anywhere with a republican house and senate majority and Creator help us if we have House, Senate, Presidency and majority conservative Supreme court - the very thought makes me ill, but it is what they have been slowly working towards for a decade and they KNOW it is within their reach.
There needs to be much more going on right now than a singular focus on a presidential candidate. There should be strong, strong organization in each city in this country. I've volunteered for President Obama for years for all of his key incentives - I have yet to receive a call from either the Bernie camp or the Hillary camp, or the DNC asking for my help.
What I would like to see and what would, in my opinion, create a landside victory, would be a Hillary/Bernie ticket. Talk about a powerhouse team!
Shine on and if you got this far, thanks for listening to my rant,
