(24,010 posts)As a woman and a sort of Baby Boomer (age 70--born during VE week, in the year of The Bomb), I am so proud to feel the Bern! I think the feminists for Hillary are REALLY missing the boat, and are going to feel very, very betrayed in the end. They have linked themselves to a candidate--Clinton--who has been responsible for crimes committed against women in other countries--in Iraq, in Libya, in Syria, in Honduras--and great harm to women in many countries inflicted with "free trade for the rich," and has also simply abandoned most women in this country to impoverishment--whether it's older women like me who don't get to retire because Social Security is so far behind as to living costs, and Medicare is NOT free (many costs, even with Medicare), or it's working mothers who can't find a job, or have to work 2 and even 3 jobs at low pay to feed their families, and hardly ever see their kids, who end up on the streets getting into trouble, and, if they are black or Latino, getting hassled, beaten, arrested or killed by the cops.
That's the Clinton program for women, for the most part. Oh, and a few women get to be very rich and do what they damn please. (It has ever been.) This is NOT liberation. Liberation means everybody gets a decent life, and we all get to live in a decent society.
The feminists for Clinton are wrong, just as I think the African American leaders for Clinton are wrong--for similar reasons. Look behind Clinton's snowball of words, and you find most African Americans in far worse situations today since the end of legal segregation. Jeez, we just lost the Voting Rights Act! African Americans are being purged from voting rolls and denied voting rights all over the place, not just in the south--and have higher unemployment than anybody, and higher imprisonment rates. This is not all Bush's doing. These are the results of Clinton policies!
But, just as with women, some African American voters seem bedazzled by Clinton, so that they can't see the truth. I don't know about you, but I feel insulted and used by the Clinton campaign, crowded into a tiny place where I am a woman and nothing else, and thus should support Clinton.
Well, I've got news for the Clinton campaign: I'm a human being, an active citizen and a humanitarian, as well as a woman.
