2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumQuestion for Chicagoans: Does a wounded Rahm Emmanuel have the juice to deliver in Illinois?
And is the machine solidly behind Clinton or are there fractures?

(11,101 posts)But Rahm has his own problems right now. Does his weak position in Chicago make him less effective in delivering Chicago?

(3,569 posts)Asset. Rahm is exactly what is wrong with certain aspects of the Democratic Party. All exemplified by HRC.

(10,493 posts)I don't see that being much use either. The stalemate in the state between him and our crazy Govenor aren't doing us any good. If anything, it all plays in to Bernie's message more. Imo

(1,898 posts)The main reason Batterning Rahm retained power by reelection was that he spent $5 million of the people money as hush money. Had the voters known about police brutality, Chuy would have won the seat. Who supports Bernie for President? Chuy!

(16,327 posts)If she has a big Chicago event as he is NOT the one introducing her, you have your answer.
Since Rahm is one of the architects of the Union and job-killing Third Way movement, Bernie would be smart to highlight the personal and ideological connections between the two.

(11,101 posts)Traditionally in Chicago the Daley Machine could deliver votes, by controlling the captains at a precinct level. I'm not asking whether Rahm's endorsement or Rahm at campaign events will help her, I'm asking if he still has control over the machine.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)I would say yes. In his run-off with Chuy he was able to up the turnout by around 25% and get the win.

(9,748 posts)We elect Democratic Committeemen directly. They appoint precinct captains who are then loyal to them, not the Mayor.
These same Democratic Committeemen from every Ward meet to determine a slate of candidates. Whom to slate for Mayor is actually one of the candidates that these Committeemen discuss. So the relationship is the opposite of what non-Chicagoans think.
In my time up here, we have had four mayors. Two of them -- both African-American -- had very little sway on these Committeemen outside the A-A Wards.
While Young Man Daley had great influence over south siders, north siders couldn't give less of a flying fuck what he had to say about anything. Daley tried once, though. And got his ass handed to him for his trouble.
I don't know how they feel about Rahm. But as someone whose political career started outside The Machine, he probably has little influence with them.
FYI: the Committeemen voted long ago to slate Hillary for President.

(11,101 posts)Thanks for the insight. I have always heard from my Chicago friends that the Chicago mayor (going back forever) used patronage to exercise control over the Machine. It didn't have much to do with how they 'felt" about him, they just acted in self interest. But it's interesting, it sounds like that is not the case.

(6,123 posts)....of Richard J Daley saw its last hurrah when Washington died. My grandfather was heavily into politics and my husband's grandmother was good friends with Sis Daley. Favors flowed fast and furious then, not now. Chicago of the '60's & '70's is not the Chicago of today.

(3,017 posts)<In May 2010 Greenberg was linked to a controversy involving White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. As a House member, Emanuel had lived for five years in a rent-free D.C. apartment jointly owned by Greenberg's wife, Democratic House member Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, and Greenberg. During this time, Emanuel was chairman of a committee that awarded large polling contracts to Greenberg's firm.[2]>
5 years rent free in a D.C. apartment. What's that worth, $150K to $200K?
But David Brock's organization dismisses it as a conspiracy theory. After all, Rahm had plenty of money so he could afford to pay rent. And he wasn't going to hire an incompetent political consultant and damage his reputation. Don't worry about those conflicts of interest (as with Hillary's $225K speeches), they don't affect us. After all, Rahm made $16 million as an investment banker in 4 years via the government/Wall Street/government revolving door.

<What is Emanuel's motivation? Emanuel made more than $16 million as an investment banker from 1999-2002. It's not like Greenberg took him in when Emanuel had no other options and saved him from having to live on the street -- Emanuel obviously could have afforded to rent an apartment. Instead, he decided to live in his friend's basement. For Emanuel, the benefit he's receiving in a purported deal in which he gets to live rent-free in Greenberg's basement and in return, Greenberg is rewarded with DCCC contracts and one of his clients avoids regulation seems fairly minimal.>

(36,437 posts)People outside Chicago have a very contrary notion of how the politics actually works here.
I'd also note that Cook County Dem Org has also slated Clinton for President. The major difference between my ward slate and the Cook County slate is that my ward committeeman endorsed Anita Alvarez while Cook County Dems endorsed Kim Foxx.

(1,947 posts)I'm in central Illinois and we have a Bernie group that also works with a student group, when the Sanders campaign decided to open a temporary headquarter for the area, we had a ton of stuff already in place, they were extremely pleased. Just Sunday I held a debate party and 50% of the people attending were knew. I'm just saying it is possible the various downstate efforts can hold off Chicago (if the Rahm connection doesn't already harm her)after all the Chicago machine didn't keep Bruce Rauner from being elected governor
