The Reason Bernie Sanders Defied The Polls In Michigan: Voters of Color, Youth

and of course, Independents

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2016/03/09/3758035/bernie-michigan-win/

FLINT, MICHIGAN — Bernie Sanders upset Hillary Clinton in the Michigan presidential primary on Tuesday, securing a larger share of voters of color than he has ever before and significantly winning young voters, who came out in record numbers.

Though the polls predicted she would easily win Michigan, Clinton secured just 65 percent of Michigan’s African American vote, a number that’s significantly lower than her usual results — including Mississippi, which also held a primary on Tuesday, and where she secured almost nine in ten black voters. The only state where Sanders won a larger share of African American voters was his home state of Vermont, which is only 1.2 percent black. Michigan, meanwhile, is more than 14 percent black.

Frederick Malone, who was wearing and selling t-shirts reading “Black Men for Bernie” at a press event in Flint on Monday, told ThinkProgress that the more black voters hear about Sanders’ policies, the more they support him.

“Bernie’s been for the black people for a long time,” he said. When asked why Clinton has been winning Southern states with large black populations, Malone faulted it on Sanders’ speaking skills.

“Hillary, she expresses herself a lot better than Bernie,” he said. “Bernie, he can’t communicate all of the things he has done. He’s been at this a long time. He marched with Martin Luther King.”

Without faulting Southern black voters (repaying loyalty with loyalty shouldn't earn contempt), it seems more black Michiganders were receptive to Bernie's message. Mr. Malone's statement above seems on-target: as Bernie's message gets better visibility, more black voters will be receptive. He's also been a loyal supporter for years, and to anyone struggling against the nation's horrible economic trends, his message in those areas will resonate.

The great thing: Sanders didn't need to change anything about his message to accomplish this. Anyone who thinks black voters aren't noticing that consistency underestimates them.

Our Mission
The mission of BLACK MEN FOR is to inform our nation’s citizens, with emphasis on the black community of candidates’ histories and work, as elected officials and public servants.

Black Men For Bernie is a call to action for black men to come together, join the fight with others, and take responsibility for their families and communities, at large, by having a seat at the table.

If we do not begin to take action and stand firm with individuals willing to fight for our rights, individuals like Bernie Sanders, Hillary becomes the result; someone who would rather do the Nae Nae to get your vote, than tackle issues destroying black families across the nation. When children are murdered or simply not educated, it is too often the mother or grandmother having to stand up for them.

While America has over-time continually mistreated and abused blacks (African Americans) — both men and women, many young black men are being systematically uneducated, brainwashed by intentionally created illusions, and led to dead-ends that don’t sustain our diverse families and communities. To make matters worse, unfortunate cases of black politicians, pastors, and absentee fathers continue to decimate our collective ability to thrive with greed, violation of trust and selfishness.

5. Last night Donna Brazille -

made a comment about the difference between southern African-Americans voters and northern African-Americans voters. Northern voters are about the economy and want specifics, and can't be "pandered to" (her words).

This morning I also saw another African-American commentator using this Michigan outcome to illustrate that the black vote isn't as monolithic as it is made out to be.

Interesting observations, though I am a little disturbed by the implications of what Brazille said.

So glad to see you so often here, these days! I think we will have to have a Bay Area DU convention viewing Party!
