Former congressman: From gun violence to the economy, here's what matters to Arizonans - and why Hillary Clinton best addresses them.

Arizona is the biggest, most diverse state voting on Tuesday, so we will have the nation’s attention.
...................

When I served in Congress, and when I worked for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, we focused on issues important to Arizonans, including: raising the minimum wage, growing our economy, making health care more available and affordable, improving care for veterans, standing up for a woman’s right to choose, building a solar economy, addressing climate change, keeping our country safe, fixing our broken immigration system, fighting for children and families, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and an issue that has personal meaning to me and my family: preventing gun violence.

I hear from Arizonans that these issues are still high priorities.

Common sense solutions to gun violence

Recent polls show that a majority of Arizonans wants common-sense solutions to address gun violence.

We want to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists, domestic abusers and other violent criminals and people with a mental illness who have been adjudicated dangerous.

We want comprehensive background checks and to hold dealers and manufacturers accountable by repealing the industry’s unique immunity protection.

There is a clear difference on this issue between the two Democratic candidates

Unfortunately, Sen. Bernie Sander’s voting record has been aligned with the gun lobby and not with the hopes of millions of Americans.
He voted to shield gun manufacturers from liability and even voted against the Brady bill. Those of us who want to reduce gun violence want better leadership than this.

t's the economy

Solutions not scapegoating

.................... We want a leader who does not need on-the-the job training and who has the depth of experience to hit the ground running on day one.

..............

Arizona Democrats have an opportunity to nominate a leader who has proposed practical solutions and who has a record of working well with others. Given her track record and proposals, I believe Democrats will see Secretary Clinton as their best choice to lead the country and work with congress to move America forward.

Though Hillary Clinton’s positions often differ from those of the azcentral editorial board, she is far more pragmatic – and practical – than Bernie Sanders. A quick breakdown of where she stands on key issues: Photo by Ricardo Rolon/The News-Press
