Related: About this forumBernie Sanders Is the Only Presidential Candidate With a Plan to Empower Native Americans
"Native Americans are the first Americans, yet they have for far too long been treated as third class citizens," Sanders' campaign page reads. "The United States must not just honor Native American treaty rights and tribal sovereignty, it must also move away from a relationship of paternalism and control and toward one of deference and support."
Here are excerpts from some of the plans he outlines:
Supporting Tribal Sovereignty and Tribal Jurisdiction: Tribes must have the ability to prosecute non-Native people who commit crimes on tribal land, and have greater jurisdiction over prosecuting all crimes, including family disputes. Bernie will fight to provide Tribes with the resources for effective law enforcement and tribal courts ...
Protecting Sacred Places and Native American Cultures: Native Americans must be empowered to maintain and pass on traditional religious beliefs, languages and social practices without fear of discrimination or suppression ...
Fighting Climate Change and Promoting Environmental Protection: ... In the first 100 days as president, Bernie will convene a climate summit with the world's best engineers, climate scientists, policy experts, activists and indigenous communities to chart the best strategy against climate change. Bernie's climate plan calls for an end to fracking for natural gas and mountaintop removal coal mining."
I'm so happy that Bernie is talking, listening and addressing the needs of Native Americans. The only candidate to do so!

(18,402 posts)She is meeting with tribal leaders from across Washington State today in Puyallup. It's easy to make pronouncements from above, but meeting with and listening to the specific concerns of the parties concerned leads to the formation of effective policy.

(18,402 posts)Another volunteer in Nevada, David Michael Karabelnikoff, an Alaska Native, echoed Deweys concerns. He shared them in a Reddit post titled, Bernie Sander's Native American Outreach & Reconciliation where he said, Community members continue to inquire when Bernie will meet with Tribal Leaders I am curious why wasn't a statewide Tribal Outreach position created in the first primary with a significant Native American population.

(18,402 posts)But the Clinton campaign did do extensive outreach to Native Americans in Nevada:
The visit to Schurz was the campaign's eighth Native American outreach event of the summer in Nevadawhich is also the state where Mook got his start, directing Clinton's 2008 operation here. Some of the meetings have been with tribal leaders, like a presentation to the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada or one to the Nevada Tribal Youth in early August. And when the Nevada team launched its "Every Nevadan" statewide rural tour in July, the itinerary included stops here in Schurz and also one with the Te-Moak Tribe in Elko.

The group of founding council members introduced today includes tribal leaders, administrators and activists who are leaders in Indian Country throughout Nevada.

The Clinton campaign today announced the endorsement of tribal leader and civil rights advocate Arlan Melendez, Chairman of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and Vice President of the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada. He will serve as national Co-Chair of Hillary's campaign.
"I am proud to endorse Hillary Clinton," said Melendez. "She holds a deep understanding of the unique challenges in Indian Country, and both an appreciation and respect for tribal sovereignty. She has demonstrated her commitment to addressing the types of health care challenges facing our Native American communities. There is no other candidate who is more qualified and ready to promote understanding of our diverse cultures and backgrounds, and bring us together as a united nation. She will be an outstanding president."

I'm not trying to do any kind of one-upsmanship here; I just think the record with respect to these kinds of charges in so many posts needs to be set straight. Hillary Clinton has a long history of working with Native Americans before this campaign, and has worked hard to communicate with the communities during the primary season.

(12,081 posts)Could it be that they're just not a big enough minority for Democrats to care about? Could it be that Democrats just give most minorities lip service and don't really care as much as they say they do about minorities? How many threads about the disabled get much attention here on DU? I have a disabled husband and son and issues that affect the disabled are very much front and center for me, but not so much for DU. Hmmmmm. Makes you think. I'm glad Bernie is giving a voice to those who don't have one. Good for him.
