Ariz. Democratic party to investigate after voters told they're not eligible

http://www.12news.com/mb/news/local/valley/ariz-democratic-party-to-investigate-after-voters-told-theyre-not-eligible/96906041

PHOENIX - Arizona's Democratic Party said its legal counsel will make an inquiry regarding why voters who say they registered as Democrats are being listed as having no party or as independents.

Poll workers are offering those voters provisional ballots, according to the party and some voters who've contacted 12 News.

A party spokesperson says its received calls throughout the day from people who showed up to vote only to be told they were ineligible.

I'm really glad the state democrats and DNC was also helping educate them, to make sure they were getting hem registered since we have TWO candidates running. And we wouldn't want any of them possibly signing up as republicans to vote for trump, given that Arizona is a red state. Information is power, right?

Then again, what was the DNCs position on early GOTV efforts this year? Suppression?

The "primary" is open and you can register with the party you want on the "primary" day.
The "primary" isn't what's happening today.

Today is the "Presidential Preference Election" and it is a closed event. You had to have been registered with the party you intend to vote for not later than Feb. 22.

If you just check the SoS website quickly, you'll come away thinking today's voting is an open event.

Tue Mar 22, 2016, 04:41 PM

Wasn't too happy voting today. After standing in line for over an hour, they tried to tell me I couldn't vote. I wasn't pleased to have to choose a party (because I don't buy into the party system), but I changed my affiliation well in time for the deadline, and I checked online after to confirm it had been updated. "Their system" said otherwise.

I got a provisional ballot, then noticed she had written my phone number incorrectly on the form. She seemed none too pleased that I caught it and corrected it. If she thinks I won't call to confirm that my vote was counted, she's dead wrong.

A man in his 70s next to me had issues, too. You could tell by his dress, mannerisms and posture that he had served in the military. I heard him say, "I have always been a registered Democrat. Listen, I just want to vote." They gave him a provisional ballot, too.

This isn't the first time I have had issues trying to vote. When I lived in Ireland, they told me I wasn't allowed to vote in the Presidential election. They finally allowed me to fax my vote, but I am none too sure it wasn't just thrown away.

These kinds of things should not be happening. If you have to cheat to win, you have already lost.

the behavior to one person in one polling place

If it's in different places, it's not limited to one person, and there is a possibility of coordination which could involve others. If it's widespread that would mean bad actors in each location and then some number of people who coordinated/communicated the action plan.

I hope it's just one bad actor.

Pass laws to

Make primary election day the same day all over the nation.
Make it a requirement to change party affiliation by no later than 3 months prior to the universal primary voting day.
Make a national GE day--preferably a Saturday.
Automatic eligibility to vote upon turning 18 years old for ALL CITIZENS starting with election 2020.
Use fingerprint technology to avoid duplicate voting...
No results reported until 8 am EST the day following the PE and GE days.

Same day primaries benefits name recognition candidates.

Party affiliation 3mo out? Screw that! I'm in an open primary state, that even allows for 14 day early voting, and same/grace period registration even the day of. We had problems with not enough ballots, but no way would I settle for a strict closed primary. How suppressive!

If anything, I'd go even further to fully open/independent ballots. Some of us live in red areas, and are forced to decide whether voting state/national seats, or local. We had some critical local elections that I opted to forgo voting on this time around, but there were centrist republicans (sometimes we have closet dems running) I would have voted for over the crazy crackpot/trumpesque republicans running locally. See our issue.

People have been voting in various capacities for a really, really long time. We pretty much have it figured out by now.

You can't have this many issues in this many states unless it's intentional. We all should think long and hard about why this is happening and who is behind it.

provisional ballots were offered. Voters were simply told to go home MONTHS after they had registered as Democrats. Many even had their new voter registrations with them and were told "you are still listed as Independent in the system. Nothing we can do."
