New Yorkers filed 40,883 voter applications online in ten days

Would-be voters in NY have until Friday if they want to vote in the presidential primary

There has been an unprecedented surge in New York state voter registrations — with about 40,883 applications received between March 10 and 20 — as New York State prepares for its presidential primary, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday.

Voters must register by March 25 in order to cast ballots in the presidential primary on April 19.

it would have had to been done by October of last year in order to vote in this year's primary.

"An obscure bit of election law (Section 5-304) requires voters to change their party enrollment prior to the registration deadline for the general election in November the year before the primary, giving New York the earliest change-of-party deadline of the 11 U.S. states with a closed primary system. New York is also the only state among those 11 where the deadline doesn't fall within the same calendar year as the primary."

This doesn't apply to new voters who will have till Friday to register.
