2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMarkos Moulitsas: Sanders: Time to bow out
Markos Moulitsas
Bernie Sanders went further this primary season than some might have imagined at the outset, but despite his significant accomplishments, his race to the White House is over. Democrats will head into November with Hillary Clinton as their standard-bearer to face off against Donald Trump (assuming he survives an attempted coup by his partys establishment).
In short, there is no plausible route for Sanders to overcome the advantage Clinton enjoyed of 319 pledged delegates before Tuesdays contests. Since the former first lady leads the pledged delegate race 58 percent to 42 percent, with roughly half of the delegates to take the nomination already allocated, Sanders would have to win nearly 60 percent of delegates in the remaining states just to tie her.

He set March 15 as the end of the campaign when there was still a path open for Bernie at that point.
Bias from the owners of sites like Kos and DU just show their true colors.

As for the far-lefters, they can continue to work for progress by backing the Democratic Party candidate its liberals elected or end up marginalized and powerless again. Strictly their choice.

(7,906 posts)However, I do think Sanders needs to stop bashing the Democratic Party and focus on the Republicans instead.
He also needs to be more honest with his supporters about his chances.
Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin
(107,767 posts)He needs to continue to run for the Democratic Primary. That's why millions are sending him money and would probably lose most of that support if he didn't. He has stated, and I support him on this, that he will stay in to the convention. If he stops "bashing" the Democratic Party (which deserves a good bashing and a good thrashing for moving to the right) and more specificly stop challenging Sec Clinton on her record, policies and past statements then it would be the same as dropping out.
Even if Sen Sanders does not get the nomination (We all know Sec Clinton has been and continues to be the odds on favorite) he can use his sizeable delegate count to influence the party's GE platform. We Sanders supporters are not going away, shutting up, falling in line or heeling. The neo-liberal wing of the party doesn't have to like it.

All I can think is they want to be us, or rather in our position, and are eaten up with resentment that they always end up losing instead of us.
And poor liberals who support Bernie -- in their normal rational way, of course. It must be very unpleasant to be linked with extremist acting out.

(32,886 posts)Starting with 1933 with the German communists refusing to join with the Social Democrats to oppose Hitler over not being pure left enough and in 1968 blowing up the convention and making it possible for Nixon to be elected.
After the catastrophes they learn their lesson for a few years and then a new generation of ideological young far left kids who never lived through a purity driven disaster have to learn those lessons again.

(57,936 posts)We Bernie voters are entitled to elect as many Bernie delegates as we can.
When I was a child, the convention really pickked the candidate.
The primaries are not over just because one candidate appears to have the most delegates.
At 72, I can tell you that anything can happen in life.
Bernie should stay in the race until after the vote at the convention.
He is a once in a century. Candidate when it comes to integrity and ideas, and I want him to gomto the convention with as many delegates and as much support as possible.
This will not be over until the convention picks a nominee.

Many of us have not yet had the opportunity to vote and are eagerly looking forward to doing so. We want to vote for our candidate. We Believe in his message. He is building a movement and bringing in enthusiastic people, and some think it is time to throw in the towel? This line of rhetoric is so disrepectful to the rest of us in the United States of America. What is the big hurry? Let's just let this all play out.

(507 posts)I think what we have today is, I think, a Republican Party which has moved from a center-right party over the last decades to a right-wing extremist party, he said, the subway whooshing him from the Capitol to his office. I think you have a Democratic Party which is not as strong as it should be in standing up for the working class of this country and taking on big-money interests. And thats been my view for a long time.
