(130,729 posts)It looks as though Sanders has a good shot to get more delegates than Clinton tonight.
Clinton is winning Arizona by 22 percentage points right now, which would translate to a net gain of about 16 pledged delegates on Sanders. And Arizona has more pledged delegates than Utah and Idaho combined. However, Sanders could net more delegates on the night if he wins Utah and Idaho by more than about 30 percentage points. Based on the results weve seen so far, he could fairly easily do that.

Any election is only as honest as the secretary of state in each state. Remember Ken Blackwell? Jeb and Florida in 2000? Richard Daly in Chicago? Don't be too sure about being sure...keep an open mind.

(1,252 posts)as of 1030 pm. Only 60 voting places for over 3.2 million people... People turned away from the polls. Those people. People who waited 4 hours to vote. and then had the election called before they got to pull the lever. those people.

(27,995 posts)The Democrats in line will vote and their votes will count toward proportional delegates. But if they are Republicans, all of their delegates are awarded to Trump.
I agree that the Republican leadership in this state greatly underestimated the number of people (especially Independents who didn't know the rules) who would show up. They based the number on the percentages who voted in the last 2 Presidential preference elections.
The Dem and Repub parties have strongly encouraged people to sign up for early ballots. I don't understand why more people don't do that.

Sanders wins 2 of 3 states & could end up with MORE delegates tonight.

Sanders is winning Idaho and Utah by such large numbers that he will take most of those delegates. (Utah has been called with Sanders getting 74% of the vote. And Idaho looks as good, according to TYT.) The total would be 56 delegates from those states. Say he gets 45 of those delegates. His projected loss in AZ (still uncertain*) gives him about 25 delegates from AZ. That's 70 delegates total for Sanders. Clinton's projected win in AZ gives her about 45 delegates from AZ. Plus she gets a few (say 10-ish) from Idaho and Utah.
That adds up to:
Sanders 70 delegates
Clinton 55 delegates.
Net 15 to Sanders!
THIS IS REALLY GOOD NEWS FOR SANDERS! --that he's on the plus side for delegates and also that he won 2 of the 3 states.
*The problems in AZ were caused by a gross lack of polling stations, so that thousands still hadn't voted when the state was called (by the networks) for Clinton. She just lost one pt on the NYT and CNN totals, as results are still coming in. 63% reporting: Clinton 59%. Sanders 38%. (3% are missing from that.). Reporting from AZ stalled at 47% precincts reporting for several hours. Now it's changing. We still don't know how either will do as to final % of the vote in AZ. I calculated the above on Clinton getting 60% in AZ.
There is hearsay that the Sanders campaign may challenge AZ, because mail-in voting (older voters) favored Clinton, and same day voters (workers, the young, others who favor Sanders) were severely handicapped by very long lines. No word on this yet.
Also, there were reports of many new voters being denied a vote because the state (i.e., a private corporation) screwed up their registrations (had them as Republicans, for instance, when they clearly were not).

(24,010 posts)Sanders beat Clinton in 2 of 3 states, and beat her on the delegate count, because those 2 wins were huge (Idaho by 78%, Utah by 79%!), which compensated for his losses in AZ and will yield him an edge of about 15 delegates for the three states. That wouldn't have happened if he hadn't won 40% of the vote in AZ (with 94% SLOWLY reporting).
Arizonans for Bernie should be proud. Thousands still hadn't voted and were lined up at miserably inadequate polling places when the the state was called for Clinton. Their votes are still trickling in--if they got to vote--depriving Clinton of a pt, adding a pt to Sanders and possibly even earning him one more delegate before the night is over. What dauntless voters!
