A friend in AZ told me about the GOP political engineering going on now...

"The primary-voting and voter-registration process in Arizona comprise the most sophisticated political engineering I've ever seen Republicans create. For example: when you get an Arizona driver's license, you are expected to declare your party affiliation. DMV shows me as DND (did not declare). If you don't declare, you can't vote in the primary. If you DO declare, you are mailed an early-voting ballot. If you subsequently decide not to vote early, and instead show up at the polling place, you are forced to vote provisional. Such people are often the working poor, under-educated, or disabled. You know...Democrats.

In the last general, Sheriff Joe was ahead by 30K votes with 80K provisionals yet to be counted. I had to vote provisional once, in a city election, because poll workers couldn't determine whether my address was city or county (even though I had been sent a sample city ballot). The provisional ballot instructions were contradictory, Poll workers naturally became angry with me when I pointed this out, even though I withheld remarks about their inability to determine my residency."

Edited to add another post from my friend in AZ:

"We live in a rental and receive mail addressed to past tenants. One of those was polling-location notification for someone with an obviously Hispanic surname. I looked at the polling location, and went there to vote. The poll workers there, however, told me I was at the wrong polling location. I traveled to _my_ poll and voted there without incident. I double-checked _my_ notification when I returned home, and sure enough it was different from the prior tenant's location, even though both notifications had been mailed to the same physical address. I can't think of a word worse than "rotten" to describe this state when it comes to democracy."

" My husband, who has never missed an opportunity to vote, was not able to vote yesterday because we discovered last night that his voter registration had been changed from his designated party to undeclared. He couldn't cast a ballot yesterday for the first time since he was 18yo."
