2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA few observations from here in AZ - FWIW
1. The Democratic party in AZ has been extremely weak for the last few decades. It is starting to get stronger, but it is still at a HUGE disadvantage.
2. At 4:57 pm last night I received an email from the AZ Democratic Party that they were aware of the problems, and urging anyone who was in line to vote to stay in line. As long as you are in line before the polls close, the polls will remain open until you vote.
3. Yesterday was a new "Experiment" in voting in AZ, reduced numbers of polling stations, but any voter could vote at any polling station, rather than having to vote in their precinct. This probably was extremely confusing to people, I know it was a little for me. I still went to my closest polling place, just to be safe. For those whose "normal" place was closed - who knows?
4. I don't know if this is the same model as will be used in the General. I will follow up and find out as soon as I can.
5. I think the turnout was a surprise. I have not seen such long lines since the General between Bush and Clinton. AZ is well known to have very light turnout on election day, as so many people vote by mail. I think this was a serious mis-judgment on the part of election officials as to how much interest there was in this election.
6. As has been noted in some other threads, it was the same experience for both parties. This was a state-run election, not party run. It may have worked in Hillary's favor, but I don't think that was intentional on the AZ Dem Party's part. I have no idea who would have benefitted on the Republican side. (Ugh).

(27,101 posts)I predict that there will be many more polling places open for the General.
Although, the best we can probably hope for is that she loses to a Republican challenger in the next primary.
The chances are pretty darn slim that AZ will elect a Dem secretary of state.
I hope I'm wrong, BTW.....

(1,163 posts)I think that this functionality is good for democracy, but I wonder how early the window opens to vote this way.
It seems like it would be a bad thing for democracy if people vote too early, say months in advance, before the various candidates are provided a chance to present their cases.
I can imagine people voting way early because they are afraid they'll forget, or to avoid any lines, etc., but in this particular year I can see how a young upstart like Sanders might suffer fewer votes, and I can imagine that some number of voters might regret their vote for whomever it might be after learning more about all the candidates.
Just thinking out loud.

(27,101 posts)I don't vote by mail. I want to wait until election day, because you just never know.
Many, many people here in AZ on the Republican side voted for Rubio by mail, long before he dropped out.
Basically, they wasted their vote.
