2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumApparently Hillary isn't the only person the Bernie aggressively interrupts ...
... just ask Judy Woodruff. His performance during tonight's interview on PBS NewsHour was, well... let's just say that it was something. And I'll leave it at that.
The entire show will be online tomorrow (Thursday 3/24) at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/videos/ ... but maybe it will appear as a YouTube clip sooner.
Anyway, heads-up to the West Coast folks! Or, if you've got a Roku or AppleTV (or any other streaming box) complete episodes of NewsHour can be streamed for free with the PBS app.

(59,498 posts)In the first place, there is no real metric that could be used. It is not a measure of what they know on detailed subject matter. On any given subject, there will be many experts who could provide more accurate, more detailed facts. Even if weight is given for creativity and ability to innovate, a person's intelligence will not be uniform over all things. (Even at this level, I see HRC more as the student, who studies hard and gets the "A", not the student, who is less diligent, but creates something profoundly different and insightful. Put another way, it is the difference between intelligent and brilliant. )
In addition, it is really judgment, vision and the ability to put a diverse group of advisers together and to ask them the right questions. Then they need, what might be the most important ability - they need to weigh the various arguments and to then make a clear decision. An added plus, is the ability to continue getting information and reassessing results after a decision is implements and having the courage needed to change course when indicated. I think it was brilliant of Obama if he was the one to suggest that Dr Moniz and Secretary Kerry work closely together on the Iran deal - I have never seen a team like that before. In addition, it was brilliant to include Pope Francis as an ally on changing policy on Cuba and, as we learned recently, helping Columbia make peace with FARC. )
Another important trait, whether working with Congress and internationally, is diplomatic skill. Here, I mean having the ability to listen to people at odds with each other and to HEAR what they are saying and craft compromises that can get people to work together.
However, it is not intelligence, wisdom, temperament, or strength of character that are the top skills in getting elected - though all would be pluses. There is a whole different set of skills that could be called POLITICAL skills.

(110,159 posts)Kosovo War, Afghanistan, Sanders supported only a gradual withdrawal from Iraq. Sanders supported the resolution that gave support to George W. Bush in both Iraq and in the larger war against terrorism. Sanders has supported Israels aggressive Middle East policies against Palestinian statehood. Sanders supported HR 282, the Iran Freedom Support Act, which was similar to the resolutions leading to the Iraq War. And Sanders has stated that he too would use drones.
beam me up scottie
(57,349 posts)Someone who sees war as a last resort and only agrees to use force when justifiable isn't a "pacifist".
Now let's get to the rest of your claims:
He voted to intervene in a genocide in Bosnia, to prevent more ethnic cleansing, that is a justified use of military intervention. Or did you want us to let them continue the slaughter?
He voted to go after the terrorists who attacked us and killed thousands of civilians on 9/11, that is a justified use of military force. Did you want us to do nothing?
Not a war, he voted against the war in Iraq because of the power vacuum it would create and after all hell broke loose (thanks to the people who voted for Bush's war like Hillary) Bernie agreed with Obama on the gradual withdrawal.
Wrong, Bernie didn't support the Iraq war resolution and I already explained why use of force was justified in going after terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.
Absolute bullshit, Bernie has always supported a two state solution and is an outspoken critic of Israel. And that's not a war.
Explain how was it similar to the Iraq war resolution and indicates a pro-war vote.
When drones are used responsibly they don't result in civilian casualties and can prevent things like you know - more war.
Keep digging.

(57,349 posts)That's the chance you take when you use hate speech against a minority group online, the takeaway should be don't be a bigot, not don't get caught and then blame the people who call out your bigotry.
You're blaming us for her hate speech? Is it the Jews' fault too, for provoking her? I'm curious, when bigots post hate speech about minorities is it always someone else's fault?
Fstdt is known for calling out religious based bigotry, take it up with them. And take it up with the bigots who post hate speech to begin with, they're not the victims.

I agree, using hate speech against a minority group after endlessly smearing a member of that minority group for months is creepy.
I'm glad fstdt found her comments, it explains a great deal about her animosity towards Bernie.

(35,956 posts)And I bet to the antisemites who blame Jews for their own misfortunes and claim things like Jews control the media or the US government, they'd insist they're real perceptions. uh, okay. The thing is that what's a real perception to them is still ugly and skin crawling antisemitism. And anyone who singles out Jews and blames them for things as though they're a group of single minded people who sit around and plot evil together is indisputably expressing antisemitism. There's no justification for it and if someone were to be genuinely remorseful for the ugliness they expressed, well they'd kind or least act a little bit sorry and not be squirming like a puppy with its head caught in the kitchen trash bin trying to blame everyone and everything else for what they said.
As for something from kos being reposted here. Big fucking whoop. That's done a lot and always has been. The internets a connected kind of place and nothing anyone says on a public forum is private. I dunno, if you disagree I guess you could try and get Google and other search engines banished or better still have the rest of the Internet removed so only DU remains.

You're okay with Hillary sending other people's kids to die for the sake of her political career and proving she's tough enough to be"Commander-in-Chief" but you're not okay with Bernie voting for funds that might help get those troops home safely

(3,937 posts)If you watch that clip again, she just interrupts him with "You know..." and then she pauses. So she doesn't even have a specific thing to say at that point she just wants to stop Bernie from talking or perhaps she is trying to get under his skin. And I love her self-satisfied "I will" in this.
I compare that to Obama's response. Similar use of the raised finger and smile, then he waits and speaks. I think the biggest difference between these two clips is the way CLINTON acts. She is almost childish with Sanders, she was more poised with Obama.

Hillary: Pickled Okra, ?Okra Creole, Fried Okra, Smashed Fried Okra, okra casserole, gumbo and depending upon the occasion, several Indian and Sri Lankan dishes.
Bernie: What people are angry about is that the top 1/10th of 1% have nearly as much wealth as the bottom 70%. We live in rigged economy and a rigged financial system where bankers and wall street are committing fraud, making the billionaires and millionaires richer.

(1 post)You are so right! Woodruff asked about 5 of the same questions about how do you stop ISIS like Bernie would have some magic answer - when he already has detailed the response. Then she infers he can't win even though he just won two states by landslides and the overseas Dems votes in 2 days!! She should have asked about voter suppression in AZ, fraud in MA, income inequality, his amazing rise from 10 months ago, the FACT he's WON 11 states and Overseas and tied in 3 others. Come on PBS now you are one of the enemy too!

(8,039 posts)I watch the News Hour fairly often, and generally speaking the interviews are both informative and respectful. She did keep repeating basically the same question, only to get the same basic answer. Maybe it was because the Brussels attacks were so fresh. But not one of Ms. Woodruff's best interviews, IMHO.
At the same time, I thought Senator Sanders could have shown a tad less exasperation. As a candidate for president, and (perhaps, hopefully) president, he's going to have to put up with endless BS from the media, far more bothersome than this. On the other hand, I can't imagine how exhausting and exasperating a campaign like this must be. My hats off to both Democratic candidates for being willing and able to endure this endurance marathon.

(59,498 posts)In fact, the most pointed to example by the Clinton supporters, actually has Bernie refusing to let HRC interrupt him when the moderator gave him time to respond. The fact was in that debate, HRC routinely spoke over both Bernie and the moderator (Anderson Cooper), ignoring the moderator's attempts to moderate. Bernie, in general, follows debate rules -- until it is clear that SHE is not doing so. HRC has used the fact that, as a woman, she is not seen as being aggressive when in fact, she is.
Your link does not even seem to go to anything involving Bernie Sanders - it is yesterday's News broadcast. However - having not seen what you refer to, Woodruff, is a reporter and like many reporters want to control an interview and to limit the time for responses. Had HRC done the same, you would be here posting that HRC won't let a reporter "put her in her place".
