What does "ground game" mean?

We're hearing that Hillary has a good ground game and Trump has basically none. What I'm wondering is, is this ground game disparity something that is contributing to her leads in the polls? Or does it mean that Hillary is registering people and will be getting people to the polls in such a way that will give her an additional advantage above what the polls are showing?

1. It's the latter. Ground game is pre planning to get more people to the polls on Election Day.

A great ground game turns out numbers higher than your polling.

I've worked on campaigns. I'm a sign guy. In local politics I'm known as "the guy with the truck", driving around town with a bed full of six foot signs. Despite the Internet age, people still base their decision on seeing the right sign in the right place, the friendly face at the door or the non-nagging/pushy phone call.

That's ground game. If Trump doesn't have it he's toast.

Trump has a huge organisational deficit and it's too late for him to make it up (and he's doing weird things like campaigning in states he can't win like Connecticut).

Volunteer to phone bank or canvass or even get a yard sign.

Trump has nothing.

It is staggering.

Ground game in states when early own you find people capable of organizing things and maybe even hiring them instead of expecting to do this work unpaid.

compared to an ordinary one is worth about 2 points in an election, more like 2.5 points in the case of Drumpf who apparently is lagging way behind. Could swing tight states like Ohio, Iowa, and possibly Arizona. It's a hard earned 2 points and it takes hundreds of thousands of people to pull it off doing the things to get people motivated to vote. Keep in mind that Thug voters are generally more motivated to vote and generally have easier access to voting, so it's really more about getting Dem voters voting. When Dems vote we win, when they sit home, we lose.

This means in general calling, data/ internet, visiting, opening state offices, identifying your voters, early voting is very important these days, absentee ballots, registering voters and distributing literature with all our candidates on them. All this is part of the Ground game and if Trump has offices in my neck of the woods...Northern Ohio...I don't see them. We have written scripts for contact voters both by phone and by ringing a doorbell...things we are supposed to discuss. Also, people in safely blue states can call swing states which this year is way more than usual...we have people calling from New York, Connecticut, and Mass to name some (there are more) here in northern Ohio. In the fall it really gets moving. We never stopped after 08 and were already working for 12 a couple of years in advance.

I have run ground operations for a number of campaigns. It is an immense amount of work to find where your voters are and get them to the polls. It starts with knocking on thousands of doors.

There is no way for Trump to implement a good ground game this far out in the cycle. No amount of money can fix this.
