2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is no longer an election, which is too bad.
This is clearly no longer an election. It's a referendum - an up-or-down vote on Donald Trump.
I'm pleased we're winning that vote. But I must say, I'm less pleased that Hillary has all but vanished from her own historic moment. I'm less pleased that there's no longer any national discussion of policy ideas.
On Nov. 8, the narrative is not going to be "America Elects First Woman President" or "Candidate Championing Progressive Ideas Wins in Landslide." It's going to be "Trump Defeated." I think that's a damned shame.

(5,737 posts)It takes a toll. About the first of October, she will have an all out invasion of Trump world. It will be so devastating that he can never recover. And yes, Americans have very short memories and Trump can most certainly recover between now and election day.

(2,097 posts)I'm not worried about Trump. He's done. But I'm kinda pissed nobody's talking about our candidate and our ideas -- including us.

(8,039 posts)and won't be relieved until Hillary is declared the clear winner on election night.
What scares me, aside from awful brain numbing possibility a Trump presidency?
The fact that the media are now falling over themselves to take the man seriously, again. His "apology" which shows "growth," the "shakeup" of his team which demonstrates he's intent on becoming "a more serious candidate." Like a few poorly read speeches off a teleprompter and we're supposed to, even expected to forget a year's worth of abuse, racism, craziness. Oh, and Hillary's e-mails! That's the ticket! The fact that the Trump team is still riddled with Putin bro's is just so yesterday! E-mails! Clinton Foundation! Benghazi!!!
I even heard one commentator today say Trump's photo op in Louisiana "showed him being presidential" or words to that nauseating effect.
Journalism, at least TV journalism, stopped being real in this country when journalists began making ten to twenty to fifty times what an average working American makes. They don't care what Trump might do to this country and its people, because they think they'll be immune to the consequences. Thus it's all about horse race and ratings. About face time on the tube. About anything BUT a cogent look at the candidates and the actual issues.
So I'm worried about Trump. I'm nauseated, scared, terrified even---and I'm sure as hell not complacent.
There's still a ways to go, and miles to go before we sleep.

(701 posts)Carrying his speeches will move voters on the right as long as he keeps himself on message. This is not over by any means. Trump makes himself available to media. I don't see Clinton nearly as often.

(24,396 posts)That Hillary hasn't had to "reboot" her campaign or replace her campaign managers at all- yet we're supposed to be awed and dazzled by the hopes of a Trump "comeback". Forget that we have a woman running for POTUS for the first time in American history or that she is a sane and competent public servant and has been for many years. But, hey! Look over there! It's Donald Trump!!!

(2,097 posts)But mark my words, on Nov 9 you'll begin hearing stories like "Hillary has no mandate" and "Nobody voted for Hillary, they just voted against Trump" and "The GOP helped destroy Trump so they're not really the enemy."

About that, I've had similar thoughts. That the headlines, instead of something Hillary-focused (like "History Made!" or "Clinton Wins!" will instead feature The Tangerine Turd under huge bold letters: "You're Fired!"
I mean, I'll be glad when that eventual headline is printed, so we can all laugh and point, but would rather it not be the media's first response...

(35,015 posts)Yes, 24/7 Trump sucks. But Hillary will have her inauguration and she will make history. That's what we need to focus on - that wonderful moment.

(58,724 posts)The 24/7 Trump coverage has pushed everything else off the table.
There was way more discussion of actual issues during the primary.

(135,425 posts)The Republican voters CHOSE Trump--never forget that.
It's no accident that they picked him, they preferred him, they WANTED him-- overwhelmingly, too -- from a wide field of candidates.
This is NOT Hillary's "fault" that a hate-filled, racist, sexist, bigoted bunch of assholes -- and that's the GOP for you -- chose a jerk.
She continues to articulate her plans and views--just listen to her when she makes campaign appearances.
smh.
If we get one or both chambers of Congress, the narrative won't be "Trump defeated" -- it will be "Dumb ass, racist, hateful, bigoted Republican agenda rejected" -- and that will be a great day in America.
GOTV. Don't be concerned, be involved.

(68,504 posts)will be illegitimate (not a real win ) because Trump lost and she didn't 'really' win...blah blah...I find it sad that any win would not be celebrated joyfully by all Democrats. Every bit of progressive accomplishment would be lost if Trump were to win. And Let me say this, Hillary Clinton is running a great campaign to defeat the orange menace. You always make it about the other guy in a campaign. Romney lost because of the 47% comment, business dealings and his refusal to release his taxes. Yet, I have never heard a Democrat say that Obama's win was somehow not good enough that really Romney lost the election and pres Obama didn't win on issues or what have you: a special treat reserved for Sec. Clinton it seems.
