2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhen a friend or relative tells me they support Trump, they do not support me
or my AA husband or my children whose father was a Muslim Middle Easterner, or my nieces who have AA spouses and mixed race children. Nor do they support my brother and his wife, the child of Mexican immigrants, and my nephews and niece. They do not support the gay son of my best friend, who has been beaten up walking home from work, nor do they support my young transgender friend who has struggled with so much for his age. They do not support achievement for my granddaughters and all the women I know. When they grin in my face and try to tell me that Trump is the man, I ask them what I missed about them in the past that they ignore the struggles of those they claim to care about to embrace the cause of a man steeped in racism, bigotry, and mysogyny. Is this future the one they really want? Is this really who they are?

(7,906 posts)but anyone who willingly votes for trump, sickens me. I do have respect for those on the right who have strongly denounced trump. The one's who haven't have lost all integrity and I have no interest in being associated with people like that.

(37,364 posts)Those on the right who have denounced Trump are only able to articulate what about him that they are against. However, they do not appear to be able to articulate what they stand for any longer.

(7,906 posts)And I believe that is why we are witnessing the collapse of their party. In many ways trump is just strongly stating what many of them have been quietly insinuating for years. It should be a big wake up call. It will be interesting to see just how many recognize how ugly their party has become.

(14,526 posts)you will see that many on the right who have "denounced" him have the same principles he does. Believe the same things. They just dress it up with fancier words.
I forgot who it was, but awhile back a DUer put it this way. Trump put down the dog whistle and picked up the bull horn.
KMOD
(7,906 posts)That is spot on.

(37,364 posts)It is a betrayal of the worst kind. How do you trust someone who would think these "values" are ok?

(1,214 posts)I'm dealing with a rift in my immediate family. My father and I support Clinton, my sister and mother - apparently swallowing the "Law and Order" fear-mongering hook, line and sinker - support Trump.
I'm married to a woman who is a descendant of Mexican immigrants. My sister in particular doesn't understand why I find taco jokes offensive. It's made for some very tense moments. I admit I've given up trying to change their minds. They've become fact-averse.

(37,364 posts)those who are disabled, and we have a couple of people with disabilities in our family. I don't understand the mindset of Trump supporters at all, let alone those who have familial ties or friendships with people from groups he has disparaged. How can they not see that the force of that anger he is commanding could be directed toward people they know. Would they stand silently and let that happen or help out? I find this so frightening.
