2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLooks like YouTube has been compromised
Uhm, I have not posted on the DU in many years. So, Hello people of the DU, again....
I know that there's probably not much you can do about this. But I'm finding it frustrating that when I go to YouTube and type "Trump" in the search box, I get lots of results that make him look sane, which I know he's not, and when I type "Hillary" I got lots of results that make her look like the devil, when I know she's actually a fine person. So, it seems like YouTube has been compromised by lots of Fox News videos (maybe by their new web team). Again, it's probably unlikely that anyone reading this can do anything about it. It was just so frustrating, and it concerns me greatly. Maybe it's temporary, and the Hillary team is on it. Or maybe it's just my account. Anyway, I had to mention it. I hope they get this worked out. I'm sure the Hillary team has people on it. Alright. Thank you.

(5,611 posts)these days so it is not a "conspiracy theory." I just searched "Hillary," on YouTube, and a bunch of "Hillary" and "illness" videos came up, with few viewers (not viral videos so I think they are using bots)

(12,319 posts)There were a bunch of anti-Hillary videos on the "Recommended" page. It's very strange, because I have never looked up a Hillary video on YouTube, let alone any that are against her.
You could be on to something here.

(14,173 posts)Punched in "Trump" and I get videos of Trump hands out relief supplies or Trump's full speech at a rally. No negative videos in the top ones, the only ones visible on my iPhone screen.
"Hillary" nets videos about Trump's opinion on Hillary! And other bizarre illuminati she-devil videos.
And my history on YouTube is of a liberal bent.
Something is going on. Couriuos what others come up with.

(6,280 posts).... but I know enough to add some kind of description to get the results you want on YouTube or any other place. Try "Donald Trump is an idiot YouTube" or try this.

(14,173 posts)The point is that entering the simple singular terms of each of their names without any positive or negative add-ons should not result in such exclusively disparaging results, ESPECIALLY given the amount of vomit coming out of Trump's mouth
on a daily basis, add to that the fact that not only does Hillary have a majority of the population behind her but internet users are at the very least more than 50% more educated and liberally minded. It just doesn't make sense.

(6,280 posts)... And this was the result. Positive for the most part

Then I typed in Trump YouTube. This was the result.

I suppose I am missing something here but both results look similar to me. Maybe it's because I'm using Yahoo and Firefox. Like I said, everybody on the internet is more savvy than I am.
I just saw a post referring to giuliani's remarks about Hillary's health. Again my point is he put in a description in doing so.
Go online and put down Hillary Clinton illness,. Giuliani quote
LiberalLovinLug
(14,173 posts)Which is how most people using YouTube search. Try that and get back to me.
"Hillary" not Clinton (to be more specific)
And "Trump" (which is more specific than Donald)
My top "Hillary" is her meeting with Paul McCartney, But the next ones are how Trump was handing out supplies while she was stumping with Obama. Then "Hillary, what drugs is she on?", then Powell responds to allegations against Hillary. Then one about her emails.
"Trump"s top 3 are a full video of a rally in Fredericksburg, Him handing out relief supplies in Louisiana, and then another full event in Charlotte.

(6,280 posts)I never use the search function on YouTube. Usually doesn't give me what I want.
Everybody hates Hillary. Well, except for those who are going to vote for her. Everybody loves Donald Trump. Well, except for those who are not going to vote for him. Translation? Hillary will be stomping a mudhole in his ass come November. I'm pretty sure YouTube won't affect that outcome.

(25,468 posts)Last week I watched all episodes of season 6 of Top Chef, but it stayed on the front page only briefly and I had to search for it every time. Instead of things I've searched for, stuff I've never looked at started showing up: entire rows The Daily Trump, Secular Talk, and other Fox News programs (it also decided I was obsessed with a show I've never even heard of called "The Marriage Ref" -- two rows of that). When I search for Trump, up comes full speeches and positive coverage. Searching for Hillary Clinton brings up crap about her health and negative coverage. I've never searched for or clicked on any of that, ever. The Trump clips that used to be there were all from The Daily Show, The Late Show, all comedy. Out with comedy, in with Fox News (not that Fox isn't a sort of twisted propaganda comedy).

(12,212 posts)I was on my iPad today, and I logged into YouTube...
I was panning down and kept getting suggestions for right wing YouTube sitesone was a Trump YouTube site. I kept telling the site that I wasn't interested in those links.
There were 4 or 5 of them, and they were "We Thought You'd Like This..." recommendations.
Considering what I watch on YouTube, those links had ZERO to do with my interests.
Is YouTube backing Trump, now?
We need to stay on top of things...and not start feeling like this election is in the bag.
These are scary times.

(1,214 posts)About 10 out of 22 links are a channel called "DONALD TRUMP LIVE SPEECH & RALLY 2016". Then faux news is stuck trying to make trump appear viable that was about 4-5 links. Then the rest were wing-nuts like wnd. The news and comedy links were negative(5 links), The Daily Show, ABC, CBS, etc.
For Clinton it was 3 positive, 3 neutral, 2 anti-trump(who was saying something crazy or stupid about Clinton) the rest were negative. I think the majority of negative Clinton stories on youtube are from faux news, wing nut channels (like wnd) and basement rush-wannabes. If Sanders, O'Malley, or Biden had been the nominee, the outcome would be similar, just like whenever a sitting US Democratic Senator ran for President he suddenly became the most liberal member of the Senate. It's mostly republicans flinging a lot of shit because they are a nearly inexhaustible source of bullshit.
I suppose Clinton's campaign could spam up youtube like drumpf is doing.

Found the same results as others have noted. Many Hillary completely bogus RW hit pieces in the last 24 hours.

(9,527 posts)This really just illustrates how little people understand search engine optimization and how fanatical fans influence the google search engine.
In 2012, Google switched from clicks on a link to how long people watched. So a group like the Alex Jones show which attracts batshit crazy but incredibly dedicated viewers will get more highly ranked because their viewers will sit and watch the entire thing. In particular it will then prompt watching similar videos, which will then cause videos by those producers to go higher up. For example, when I searched for Hillary Clinton on Youtube, I see several videos from the Alex Jones show, I see several H.A. Goodman videos and several from MLordandGod, all of which look to be insipid. But it shows how the algorithm functions where videos that appeal to the same group of idiots who desperately want to believe that Trump is winning, or Clinton is deathly ill, will sit and drool on themselves watching these videos for "proof". It's the intellectual equivalent of the unskewthepolls.com guy from 2012. He was super popular with some of the Republican party because he was selling what they were eager to buy. It didn't make him right, or Romney win.
Likewise idiots trying to find "proof" that Clinton is on death's door because Giuliani said she was, will go watch these sort of videos and suddenly they are more highly ranked. It's not exactly shocking that something being promoted in the right wing portions of the media would then all of a sudden be popular on Youtube.

(12,319 posts)When I go to YouTube, however, just the basic "Home" page that you hit before typing anything into the "Search", anti-Hillary videos come up on "Recommended".
I have never searched for Hillary Clinton on YouTube. The stuff "Recommended" for you is supposed to be based on what you have searched for, and viewed, in the past. Therefore, no Hillary Clinton videos should come up for me, let alone anti-Hillary ones.

(15,262 posts)They are manipulating social media because on the internet anything goes, no matter how false of demeaning or evil or just plain idiotic, you can post it.
Someone had access to the API for Twitter and wrote a script that could out-perform Trump's scripts so they got the top comment on anything that mentioned trump. The Trumpers managed to get the person blocked by making numerous false complaints about him. But, this exemplifies what is going on. A lot of false, fake people are created and they inundate the web with pro-Trump stuff by using scripts and computers that have instantaneous impact to any mention of Trump's name. You can imagine what they do to every mention of HRC. There is a podcast here you must listen to: https://twitter.com/hashtag/WhoisNeil
Effort to Expose Russias Troll Army Draws Vicious Retaliation
Web brigades in Russian, known in English as troll armies, are being used by Trump.
In 2013, a Freedom House report stated that 22 of 60 countries examined have been using paid pro-government commentators to manipulate online discussions, and that Russia has been at the forefront of this practice for several years, along with China and Bahrain. In the same year, Russian reporters investigated the St. Petersburg Internet Research Agency, which employs at least 400 people. They found that the agency covertly hired young people as "Internet operators" paid to write pro-Kremlin postings and comments, smearing opposition leader Alexei Navalny and U.S. politics and culture.
Each commenter was to write no less than 100 comments a day, while people in the other room were to write four postings a day, which then went to the other employees whose job was to post them on social networks as widely as possible.
Some Russian opposition journalists state that such practices create a chilling effect on the few independent media outlets that remain in the country.
Further investigations were performed by Novaya Gazeta and Institute of Modern Russia in 201415, inspired by the peak of activity of the pro-Russian brigades during the war in Donbass and assassination of Boris Nemtsov. The effort of using "troll armies" to promote Putin's policies is a multimillion-dollar operation. According to The Guardian investigation the flood of pro-Russian comments is part of a coordinated "informational-psychological war operation". One Twitter bot network was documented to use more than 20,500 fake Twitter accounts to spam negative comments after the assassination of Boris Nemtsov and events related to the war in Donbass.
