(3,055 posts)But I don't remember Carville having this attitude. Rahm Emanuel, yes, and he certainly had the Clinton's ears. And unfortunately, Obama's in the early days.

(1,214 posts)Michael Moore sent an ex-KGB agent to "search for the heart and soul" of the Democratic Party. That segment closed with Carville talking to a Democratic Party meeting where he said something along the lines of "in order to get elected now(this was during newt gingrich's congress) Democrats need to sound like republicans."
There were a lot of Democratic Party members who shared this belief, that we should surrender framing issues to republicans and just say "me too". It had some very limited success in deep red states but didn't do well elsewhere. In fact since this idea was adopted, we've lost more seats in the House and Senate than we've won. Unfortunately where it succeeded we often ended up with Democrats that sided with republicans when we really needed their votes.

(1,214 posts)That wouldn't be considered "sounding like a republican". If he were to talk about taxes(at the time, I pretty much ignore him these days), he would not say anything about taxing billionaires, he would say something like: "yes taxes are to high, but we need to make sure that those tax cuts create jobs for Americans". Preemptively surrendering to the republican idea that taxes are too high, essentially saying that the gop is right about the economy while shutting out traditional Democratic positions.
To be fair, the Democratic Party was terrified by reagan's victory and gingrich's continued success attacking liberals(really anything that the republicans didn't invent), and thought that they needed to dump all that hippy equality crap and do whatever it took to win elections. They've been running scared policy-wise and legislatively ever since. Carville himself will throw out some red meat to liberals on occasion, but if you follow his results, they aren't progressive/liberal.

One of the next segments was about Rudy Giuliani lacerating Hillary and blaming her for everything short of 9/11, Pearl Harbor, the polio epidemic of old, and New Coke. I immediately thought - "hmmm... guess we know who's going to Hell this time!"

I'd wait for the Audible version if Carville had narrated the whole thing.
