Children are really watching this election

I subbed today in a 4/5th grade class and was reading a book that was about idioms. One of the illustrations has a turtle with hair that looked like Cheetos hair. The kids started laughing saying "it's Cheetos hair". I continued on with the book but they asked me about what I thought of Cheeto. I forced myself to be neutral and said, " a lot of people support him and that is their choice". They would have none of it and started putting him down and laughing he is a clown. We even did Mad libs and they kept putting in Cheetos name. I moved on to something else but throughout the day they kept bringing him up as a joke. I could have had a good old discussion but decided it was best as the teacher to be noncommittal, but inside I was laughing like hell!

... was sitting and watching his brother's martial arts class today and turned to me out of the blue and said "Trump is a very dangerous man."

He's asked who Trump was and why he was so mad when seeing him on t.v. and now that the ads are running in full force he's very aware. It's interesting to watch him form opinions. He identifies with many of Hillary's ads and recognizes them as his America.

Early on when he first asked who I was voting for and I replied "Hillary" he noted that she was against the trafficking of girls... He didn't know what it meant exactly, other than that it was bad, but he'd seen an ad and remembered that line.

It's been fascinating viewing the election from his perspective.

Show them a 3 minute segment of talking points that would be politically nuetral. Then ask them who'd they vote for. For a significant majority, Trump would come off as threatening....face distortions, arms flailing. Hillary would be non-threatening, even nuturing...talking calmly. Hillary would be the nice aunt/grandmother. Trump would be the crazy, unpredictale uncle/grandfather.

Sometimes I mute Cheeto on tv. He looks deranged even with no sound. The body laguage is not positive.

You're right Hillary puts off a more positive vibe even muted. She has non threatening body language.

Go kids!

This is the kind of story that I would like seen by very young kids in schools:

the Southern Poverty Law Center is getting ominous reports from teachers. More minority children in school are frightened. There is more bullying. A lot of the bullying seems to be over the Trump campaign.

Teachers are asking for help on how to teach about this election. Many of them have decided not to teach it at all. It is too inflammatory.

But we know there are done principals who turn a blind eye to this type of harrasment.

I've gotten to the point that I won't sub at a school with a weak principal who doesn't care if kids are bullied or teased.

Name calling, bullying, personalities, talking about hair and clothing, paying all attention to who's ahead and almost none to the biggest issues, the dire need for a real restructuring of our political economy.

We can forgive and even expect children to see this election in these simplistic terms, but what about grown-up people who'll be voting in November? Count the threads on DU (it used to be a place for real discussion) dealing with serious transformational issues, vs the ones about "Hillary or Trump."

If all we can do is stand together and throw rocks, how are we any more ready than children to take this country forward?
