2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI don't start threads... But I will now!
I am a staunch Bernie supporter. I WILL vote for Hillary!!
I am a 54-yr old white woman who came from an impoverished family in West Texas and grew up oblivious to politics. I worked hard, despite significant disadvantages, to create a life for myself and my children and as it turned out, as a single mother for many years. I had no time for politics or how Washington and its machinations affected my daily life.
My primary concern was paying rent, utilities, food, school supplies, field trips, clothes..etc. As I said, I had no time for politics. I just had to find a way to live day to day.
I finally became concerned about our political system when W was anointed by SCOTUS. I realized at that time that there was something bigger going on in my world beyond cashing my paycheck and working for the next one. That what happened was clearly wrong and disturbing.
I accidentally found DU. I've learned much more as a member of DU and paying attention to other sources than I would ever have by just going on with the daily grind and ignoring how the politics of America truly affect the hours of my day.
I could go on, but the bottom line is, I spent time educating myself about the politics of politics and how my life and those I love are directly affected. Beyond that, how the lives of others beyond my small world are affected by our government. Bernie spoke to my heart. I volunteer for his local campaign office. I was disappointed when he didn't win.
But what also happened was that I had to take a much closer look at HRC. I freely admit that I only knew about her by way of the MSM over the course of many years. But I looked. And I looked hard and with a cynical eye. I could go on and on about what I found, but I would probably be preaching to the choir on her attributes.
I watched her speech today and was glad I was alone at home. Because I could have been a cheerleader practicing for tryouts in my livingroom. I just lacked the pom poms.
I truly had no clear understanding of her decades of work that I would have have heartily supported had I been more involved in politics earlier in my life. I am humbled by my ignorance.
She has my 110% support and I will be out there working to make sure that Virginia goes true blue.
I'm all in!!

That was a great speech she gave, right?
Either way, welcome and thank you sincerely!

But Hillary's speech today inspired me to put on my big girl pants and take a stand.

(14,852 posts)I'll make a prediction regarding the MSM about it...
They will focus on Hillary claiming that Trump said that the Sandy Hook massacre was faked.
I've found references to Trump speaking well of Alex Jones and befriending other kooks who have spouted that nonsense, but no such quotes from Trump. Maybe he said it himself at some point and I missed it?
Anyway, the MSM seems to hold Hillary to a much higher standard, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's a big story for them... especially if it's shown to be not technically correct. Never mind Trump's constant lies.

(14,852 posts)I didn't misunderstand Hillary's intention, but it wouldn't surprise me if she's attacked if Trump didn't actually say such a thing himself.

(14,852 posts)Sorry. I missed her saying "Alex Jones" previous to the comment. I was web surfing while listening and probably got too distracted.
With that cleared up, the speech strikes me as VERY SOLID! I'm so pleased that she attacked Trump the way she did!

(11,132 posts)Don't be sorry; vote. As someone posted on DK, she owned his ass with an owning stick. Her speech was short, to the point and a beautiful thing to hear. I was a Bernie supporter in the primaries but I'm all in for Hillz now.

(2,338 posts)I have issues with crowded places. But I fully intend to be there. I was there for Clinton's 2nd inauguration and it was a zoo. I swore I wouldn't do that again.
But minds do change and even though I will find it a bit frightening, being claustrophobic, I'll suck it up, go, and stand tall in my support and pride.

(12,448 posts)And I don't mean just supportive of Hillary, but of you. If you're claustrophobic you'll need someone who loves you by your side.

(6,537 posts)I also supported Bernie, but in my case have watched the Clintons and politics in general for decades, and while supporting Bernie I never had the need or desire to despise Hillary as so many in that crowd insisted on. One can, in fact, like BOTH!!! I'm glad you have reached tht point, they are both good people and good leaders.
calimary
(81,109 posts)You. Are. AWESOME!!!
I'm convinced by now that LOTS of good-hearted and well-intentioned and sincere people who earnestly want better things for America and Americans just haven't learned the REAL truth about Hillary Clinton. All they've heard is the sloganeering and the constant shit-spewing and character assassination - that's gone on, relentlessly, for years. If they knew the real Hillary, they wouldn't think she's crooked, or corrupt, or a liar, or an ice queen, or any of those other "lovely" names and descriptions she's called. Frankly, I don't know how she even gets up out of bed in the morning, facing that kind of barrage and garbage every day.
I've been a big fan of hers since 1992, when I first discovered her on her husband's campaign trail. She had me at "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies..." She totally had me. I was just completely owned.
Interestingly enough, I'd heard about her while I was still working, interviewing people like actress Mary Steenburgen and award-winning writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, both women with roots in Arkansas, who knew Hillary when she was the First Lady of Arkansas. And they each independently raved about her.
Linda Bloodworth-Thomason was one of the brains behind "Designing Women" among other things. She also produced the "Man from Hope" mini-doc that was played at the 1992 Democratic Convention. Little tidbit here - Bloodworth-Thomason was about to launch a Burt Reynolds sitcom called "Evening Shade," about a football coach in a little town in Arkansas. When I interviewed her about it, we talked about the title, and she said they'd been looking for a unique and colorful name for the town in her show, something that would be kind of an interesting and unusual and down-home/charming little hook. She said they were friends with the governor, whose wife said - "hey, how about Evening Shade? It's an actual town here in Arkansas." And that's how the series got its name. That governor's wife was Hillary.
Btw - Bloodworth-Thomason, in a later interview, told me that as soon as she saw the Gennifer Flowers whoop-de-doo erupt in the press, she knew he was going to win the Presidency. She recalled watching the coverage and said she just knew. That was IT. He was absolutely gonna win. As I remember, she called it before anybody else did, including the political set.
Sophiegirl
(2,338 posts)Fascinating background info. Never saw Evening Shade.
The truth is, I never disliked Hillary. I simply didn't know what I didn't know about her. Bernie stuck a chord in me that her message, at the time, didn't.
Having said that, the more I learn and see of her, the more I stand in awe. I overcame a lot in my life and became very successful despite the odds being against a strong, often willful, stubborn woman. Those weren't the descriptions others used for me. But I would have withered on the vine if subjected to the constant attacks that she has withstood over three decades.
sherlocksistah
(51 posts)so many years of witch hunts, attack ad infinitum, and I remember when it all started. Way back when she said we should have Universal health care! After that she was fair game for all the corporate thieves who hate her to this day and that includes their right wing "think" tanks, etc. I never did believe any of those lies. Kudos to moi! Now methinks it's all backfiring and folks are realizing what this attack strategy is about and where it comes from. Must be so because every single poll lately has her way ahead of Agent Orange!!
She's a fighter to the max and I will fight with her to the end.
I have to say, I loved your post very much and wish the very best for you Sophie!!

I would have signed up sooner but for some reason I thought you would have to pay for an account.

(3,247 posts)who voted for Bernie in the primary but realized that Hillary's victory here was an omen of her electability in the general. Of course, she has my vote this year. However, and regardless of the 2016 outcome, I'd warn any fellow Virginians that "get rid of all those damned Southerners, hate them all" has been standard fare here since 2004, and that is unlikely to change in our lifetimes here or elsewhere in allegedly progressive fora.

(7,616 posts)It did, I will and even volunteered to work for her locally.
I never did believe any of the shit they were saying about her in the media but I was concerned about who she might be beholding to special-interest wise with all the money she took in with those speeches. The TPP thing really concerned me.
But, I'm thinking (and hoping) she and Bill have made enough money by now that she can just tell them all to take a hike and do the right thing without worrying about any possible financial repercussions down the line. She was quite gracious with Bernie after the election and has apparently incorporated much of his (and my) issues into the platform and I believe sghe will follow through with them.
Great Post!
