Related: About this forumIs It Too Late To Replace Trump?
I got to thinking that traditional Republicans must be horrified at what Trump has done to their Party. I'm thinking particularly about people like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. Is there any road available to replace Trump... Or is it too late?
My second thought... If he can't be replaced, will the Republicans at some point disavow him in mass? Or will they watch their Party continue to be destroyed?

(53,339 posts)Unlikely that the party would offically disavow him, but expect to see more prominent Republicans jumping ship.

(15,262 posts)It took a bit of prodding and reminders to get the State Chairman to finally file the paperwork required.

(29,166 posts)probably on a state by state basis he could be replaced.
Practicably, it's too late. If he was forced off the ticket now, he Trumpeters would not show up... that's like 10 to 20 million votes. The Democrats would win the Presidency, the Senate, the House, and probably a lot of state wide races for everything down to dog catcher.
The best they can do right now is either go with Trump, continue with the efforts to "soften" his message while simultaneously doing the "wink and nod" to the "alt right" Trumpeters ("he doesn't really mean what he says, he really is going to deport all those brown people... including their anchor babies" , or they distance themselves from his rhetoric, and hope that they somehow keep the Senate and the House.
I think they are trying a little bit of both, selectively going with Trump when he hits Clinton on email, Benghazi, etc and distance themselves when he says she is a bigot.

(68,347 posts)The best they can hope for is to save the Congress and, we need at least the Senate...hopefully the house.

(5,935 posts)if they couldn't get the new candidate's name on the ballot, that wouldn't be a problem because votes cast for Trump could then be awarded to the new candidate (electoral college).

This is what they wanted. Let it eat them.

(10,811 posts)From what I've been reading, the GOP sees the campaign going down in flames and is already strategizing how to hobble a Clinton Presidency. As bad as Trump is the worst scenario in Republican circles would be The Donald winning and completing the party's destruction. With a loss, they supposedly feel they can rebuild while nailing Hillary on every policy plan. In other words, obstruct and smear.
Read an article this morning at Politico which basically indicated that the 'big guns' they had hope to use against Clinton have been lowered; they're planning to take aim after she's elected.
Sounds like same old, same old from the Republicans--if you cannot claim the cat seat, do everything you can to drive the car into a ditch.

(10,005 posts)his replacement may not be on the ballot. Some states have already printed and mailed out the ballots.
Each of the states have replacement rules but they could cause court challanges and the electoral college might have problems.
Getting ballots to armed forces and oversea citizens takes time.

(15,429 posts)The last few that will close up do so in early September. After that, his name is on the ballot in all 50 states and that can't be changed.
This means that in a couple of weeks, there are 29 states where if he wins the electors MUST, BY LAW, cast their electoral vote for him.
So in effect, yes, it's too late to replace him.

And what you describe is completely false.

(6,551 posts)By mid September, it will be impossible to get a different Repub on all 50 state ballots.
They can't stage an insurrection in 3 weeks.
