2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA) "Why" Trump is going to Mexico- and B) what it'll do to his campaign
There's been a lot of speculation, gleeful or otherwise, that this impulsive trip will somehow backfire on Trump, that it will result in terrible publicity, humiliating treatment by Mexican leaders, etc., that will cream him in the polls, yadayadayada...
Y'all are not getting it.
Stupid? Well, yes, in the objective sense of the term, the Nuclear Cheeto is definitely "intellectually challenged."
But...
There is one thing he knows better than anyone/anything else, and that is, how the brains of the 34% work, and how to toss them the cookies that make them salivate.
And that's all he really cares about- keeping the adoring crowds adoring.
So: WHY is he going to Mexico?
It's very, very simple: So he can say that he went.
And when he comes back, no matter what the media coverage says, the Human Hindenburg will tell his acolytes what they want to hear about what he did/said while he was there, and he'll burnish those fantasies with the credibility that having "been there" makes what he's bloviating a) important; b) TRUE! or c) YOOOOOOOGE!
And then he and his surrogates will "Trump"et his Incredible Foreign Policy Experience, because, 'trip to Mexico!'
And in the debates, he'll endlessly assert 'truths' and 'realities' based on what he did/found/etc. during his Major Foreign Policy Swing through the entire Central/South American region, and claim that his 'experience' Trumps all other sources of factual information.
And the 34% will suck it up and drool it back out and magnify his claims and beg for more.
He's gonna get a YOOOOOOOGE return on this little investment, believe me!

(3,040 posts)He will use this trip like his talk to the Chicago police officers.
"I spoke to many many great Mexicans and they want to pay for a wall! They think it is a good idea. Mexico is a great nation that no one would ever want to leave unless they are rapists and murders!"
And the low info folks will buy that and Trump, in the most absurd way, just got his foreign policy street cred.
This election has been so utterly absurd that there are no words to describe it.

(20,733 posts)...just TELL the 34% he did it, once he's back.
You know the "liberal media" never gets it right...

(137 posts)they'll out him big time if this all goes terribly wrong. He can come back and appeal his mouth breathers with tidbits about how he stood up to the Mexican president, how he's going to strong arm that wall into becoming a reality.
He's flipping the script. All the media outlets are on this trip like a duck on a June bug. No one is talking about the FBI releasing the interview notes that will support HRC, no one is talking about the speech she made this morning contrasting her way of dealing with foreign countries and Trump's way. All eyes are on Trump and his immigration speech tonight. As long as there is no tape of the actual meeting, he's going for the slam dunk in the news cycle wars. Unless of course, we all luck out and MSNBC's guy in Mexico is able to find out exactly what goes down between the Mexican president and Trump.

(3,335 posts)My opinion regarding why Trump went to Mexico is that he reeks of desperation and the need to be seen as belonging on the "world stage". The invitation from the President of Mexico was sent in recognition of the fact that we, the USA, were about to undergo an important election and the President of Mexico wanted to extend an olive branch to the next administration. There was no definitive date put forth in the invitation sent last week. Trump acknowledged the invitation yesterday, and said, "I'll be there tomorrow." According to the news reports I saw, the Mexican government was caught off guard. They had not expected a visit on one days notice. But having extended the invitation, my guess is that they will be gracious hosts.
As for Trump to accept the invitation yesterday, with the offer to show up the next day, "Who does that?". Someone who is desperate. Even if Trump had nothing on his agenda for today, which he does, (Hello Immigration Speech twice postponed already), he could have pretended to be busy with a full calendar and go back and forth "trying" to work out a date which is workable for both parties. Instead, his "I'll be there tomorrow" reeks of desperation and doesn't come across to me as someone who knows how "The Art of the Deal" works in real life. I realize that Trump only had between Now and November 8 to conduct a visit since his campaign would be all over by November 8. But I'm certain that somewhere in the "Art of the Deal" it has to say something to the effect to: always keep your opponent guessing, or negotiate on your own terms (even if you're just talking about a date), or never let them see you sweat, etc. Trump while racing to beat Hillary to the first official foreign visit as a presidential candidate, showed himself to be the weakest link, not just to the President and citizens of Mexico, but to the World.
