The Real Questions That Need To Be Asked About Trump's Border Wall
Many in the news media have focused on Donald Trump's pledge to make Mexico pay for the wall he plans to build across the U.S./Mexico border. The most important question is not whether Mexico will pay for the wall. The most important question is how will Trump actually build the wall. Portions of the land that stretches across the border are either private property, protected by treaties, or owned by Native Americans.
So, journalists need to ask Trump how he would get around the obstacles of private property, treaties, and Native American land. Will he use government money to buy private property in order to build the wall. If people refuse to sell their land to the government how will he respond? Will he be able to convince private property holders to allow the government to build the wall on their land? Will he build the wall on private property even if people refuse to sell their land and refuse to give permission for the government to build on their land. What will he do about sections of the border where treaties either prevent the building of a wall, or make it difficult to build a wall? Will he ignore those treaties? Will he renegotiate those treaties? What will he do about Native Americans?
