2012 GOP threat: Sgt. Bergdahl swap will be Obama, Democrats’ ‘Willie Horton moment’

By Scott Kaufman
Sunday, June 1, 2014 11:25 EDT

Republicans are outraged that President Barack Obama authorized a prisoner exchange with the Taliban for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl — who has been held captive since 2009 — and that they plan to use the exchange against Democrats in the upcoming election.

The news of the prisoner exchange — in which Sgt. Bergdahl was swapped for Afghan detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay — surprised many Republicans because, they claim, it violated a law Obama signed last year requiring the defense secretary to notify congressional committees 30 days before arranging for a transfer of prisoners.

When he signed the law, however, President Obama issued a signing statement in which he contended that the notification requirement was an unconstitutional infringement on his powers as commander-in-chief.

“Due to a near-term opportunity to save Sergeant Bergdahl’s life, we moved as quickly as possible,” a senior administration official told The Washington Post. “The administration determined that given these unique and exigent circumstances, such a transfer should go forward notwithstanding the notice requirement.”

Let them try to impeach. The repuke party is the party that got us into two wars that would go on forever if a repuke was elected. Poll after poll does not agree with the repuke view of the world

John McCain is leading the charge on this. Looking back on his career and everything bush and rove did to him, along with his loss is Karma coming back to him for being such an asshole

try to finally convince America to hate the black man in the WH as much as you do.

Meanwhile you can vote once again against the Veterans Benefits Bill this week, maybe the media will mention this is your second time this year to vote against it.
And many are noticing your criticism of Obama for not rescuing the Wrong Turn Marine with weapons in Mexico, so what do you want?

for two more years because the fucking evil GOPers wouldn't allow a swap involving a few poor slobs, probably captured by warlords, who've been rotting in Guantanamo.

There really is a special place in Hell for the GOP.

5. All the TPers are going on about Bergdhal being AWOL, a Taliban sympathizer,

teaching the Taliban to build bombs, his parents supported him in this and have been tweeting Arabic quotes. Oh yeah, and his dad said some quote from the Quran and Pres. Obama sympathized with this because he gave Bergdhal's dad a hug.

Don't know why I keep beating my head against a wall, but I've been searching on here and Snopes to see what I can find to refute this. Guess I just get personal satisfaction out of pissing them off

9. This must have been considered when they decided to do the swap.

5 of theirs for one of ours.
It's strange just coming out of the blue like this.

There has to be more going on under the surface that we aren't privy to.

10. Considering that Bush's prisoners in Gitmo are a liability, this is a win-win.

We have indefinitely detained people in Guantanamo Bay thanks to Bush's war crimes, and we have to deal with them. If anything, the GOP is miffed that they did not get a chance to obstruct the deal. 5 fewer Bush prisoners is a good thing.

The Bush admin captured them and locked them up and no one has known what the hell to do with them since. Bush sentenced them to indefinite detention. If Obama lets them go, the thugs will cry bloody murder. By holding them under Bush's sentencing, the thugs have been quiet, as they don't want to remind anyone of the details.

Two full years, in fact, before it even happened? Nice trick.

he posted 2 articles about Bergdahl, both claiming he was guilty, but I told him he should let a court of military justice determine what went on, since neither of us were there.

then he said we'd never agree, so he wouldn't discuss it with me any further.

I said he was "abandoning his post" even though he'd "volunteered" the article in question.
