Sounds like another person who came over from DK, where every logged in user gets to uprate or downrate every individual comment. So instead of these +1 or +1000 comments you see around DU, you actually get to see a count (and a clickable list with the usernames of each user who uprated or downrated each comment.

OP's are called diaries, and everyone's go into the 'recent diaries' stream on the bottom right of the page. If enough people 'recommend' the diary, it gets bumped up to the 'recommended' stream that's just above the recent list. Or if it's particularly well-written, the 'rescue rangers' people will promote it up to the 'community spotlight' section.

The main bulk of the front page are all OP's from staff or featured writers who are chosen from among the membership for one year terms. You have to click on the 'continue reading' buttons under OP's on the front page to read the whole entry and everybody's comments below, or click on the post name on posts listed on the right in the community spotlight, recommended, or recent diaries to read the posts and and comments.

Instead of having 'topic' sections, they just use tags, and you, as the OP select the tags to add to your diary, and use the search function to pull up diaries by specific posters or on specific tags.

(The place used to make you wait a bit to do original diaries to discourage trolls.) then look for a block on the upper right hand side of the page. It might say 'Welcome Back, Eliot Rosewater', next to a blank avatar picture. On my account, immediately below that it says 'Diaries New Drafts'. Each word is a link. Click on the 'New' to start a new diary. You'll get a page with several boxes. One is for a title, the next for the 'teaser' section that people can see if they hover their mouse over the headline of your diary in the recent list, the next for the body of the diary, and last a line for you to type in tag words separated by commas. When you've got everything you want typed in you hit the 'save and preview' button at the bottom. If all looks good, you 'publish' it to put it up where others can see.

A couple other quick notes - on DK they don't have the convention of always titling the 'diaries' with the name of external sources if they're linking to an outside article, and they also generally provide their own commentary in the diary body, not simply post a few paragraphs and wait for other people to post commentary. And it's considered good form for the OP to reply to some of the comments so as not to be considered a 'hit and run' diarist.

'The Iraq War made fools of us all.'

Yes, many Democrats both elected and in the public joined the push for war.

The difference, though, was that it was Republican leadership that deliberately lied, repeatedly, to push the war.

Dems (and many Repubs too, I'm sure) were fools for believing the Republican President, his Intel people, his Department of Defense people, and his National Security Advisor, all of whom lied and lied and lied to push the rest of us into supporting the war, and then the subsequent idiot occupation, making it politically untenable NOT to support the lies by screaming patriotism over and over.

So no Joe, we don't all share equally in the idiocy of a war of aggression. Republican war criminals took us into war, and lied to Democrats who were fools for believing what Republicans were telling them.

Many, many of us Democrats were not fooled in the least. Meanwhile, the repiggies didn't care, they wanted war.

But you can scan the political blogs from the years around the start of the war and find a lot of unelected dems saying 'hell no', and continued opposition to the war every year thereafter, with dems wanting out asap.

why were so many of the very serious people fooled? More disinformation to cover up the fact that were not fooled...they were fools.

17. Duped by Dubya!

During the nine year (Dec 79 to Feb 89) Soviet war in Afghanistan when brave Muslims from many lands
flocked there to aid in the defense of this Islamic Holy Land from its infidel invaders, they were hailed
as true freedom fighters and given military training, equipment, weapons and billions of dollars
from the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.

Nowadays, due to a perverse figment of the imagination created by the war criminal Dubya
and his vile conspirators, they have been dubbed "Terrorists", supposedly participating in
a so-called "War on Terror" (Dubya, 20 Sept 2001).

This is a false terminology, contrived by them to hide their greedy capitalist attempts to steal oil
by instigating illegal wars of aggression against oil-rich Middle Eastern countries and their many
innocent men, women, and children.
They have even gone so far as to illegally intervene in 'The War in Afghanistan', for not one Afghan
(or Iraqi, for that matter) ever attacked America, nor even dreamed of doing so . . .

To be sure they have managed to form up whole armies of Muslim fighters and trained, drilled,
and equipped them with billions of dollars of modern weapons . . . yet they have failed miserably
to win their hearts and minds, for there are scant apostates in such wonderous ranks.
Even now they gladly hand over their weapons and join their Muslim brethren!

The whole world shall soon witness the last enemy infidel soldier being driven from the soil
of Sacred Islamic Holy Lands; - and verily, there again shall Sharia Law yet prevail!

"To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they have been wronged;
- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid." - (Al Qu'ran 22:39)

"No War but Class War!" - Frank H. Little (1879 - 1917)
