There is no IRS email scandal.

I've been watching the hearings today with Commissioner Koskinen (brilliant guy, sharp as a tack) and its painfully obvious how technologically ignorant or dishonest Republicans are regarding this whole email thing.

First off, Lerner's email crash happened before she even knew about the "inappropriate targeting" of political groups (both left and right, YES BOTH). The date when Lerner became aware of this has already been established throughout the SIX investigations looking into this matter. The date was 2-3 weeks after the hard drive crash occurred. ALL of Lerner's emails after that time have been provided to all investigating bodies.

Furthermore, tens of thousands of Lerner emails from the 2009-2011 period were recovered because the IRS went and obtained any copies of emails between Lerner and other IRS employees from those other employees email accounts. Additionally, the White House and the Treasury has provided any emails from Lois Lerner during that period, as a side note, the number of emails between Lerner in the White House was a big fat whopping ZERO. And its also the IRS policy that all employees have to print and store paper copies of anything that meets the criteria of being an "official document" and all of those documents filed by Lerner have been provided.

On top of that, the hard drive crash that occurred in 2011 was well documented by the IT people who were assigned to try and recover the data. There is documentation that recovery experts were brought in and worked on attempting to recover this hard drive's data for 3 weeks. There is documentation that Lerner was desperately contacting the IT people regularly during this period inquiring about getting her data back. Keep in mind ALL of this happened before Lerner even knew about the so called targeting.

A few other facts that have came out is that prior to 2008, the IRS only backed up 3 months worth of emails. After that year, the policy changed to 6 months. Its also interesting to note the IRS IT infrastructure is horribly dated. They are still using Windows XP for god sake. And its ridiculous that emails are downloaded onto the client computer instead of permanently stored on a server somewhere. But that's a failure of funding and infrastructure and has been a systemic situation in the IRS for years and years.

Something like 42,000 Lois Lerner emails have been provided. All emails after Lerner's awareness of the practice in question have been provided. There wasn't even a known "crime" to cover up in regard to this hard drive problem.

I may post more on this as I continue to listen to these hearings. But so far, I'm seeing more of a big nothing burger.

good post thanx!

ACORN, Benghazi, IRS, Fast and Furious, and ..... "they" can't come out and say that
they are just pissed a black man is in the White House and so "they" have to find
these scandals.

BTW if they want to investigate something how about Sen. Graham, Lora Logan, and
some people at CBS working to make up a false story about Benghazi to undermine
President Obama?

We also need a REAL investigation, with consequences for wrongdoers, of the decision to go to war in Iraq.

After Bush took office there was talk in GOP circles of re-impeaching Bill Clinton over the Marc Rich pardon, so apparently it's possible to impeach a president after he leaves office. Exactly what the point would be I don't know, the only punishment the Constitution allows is removal from office. We've got five thousand headstones that have people who shouldn't be dead under them in the United States alone, plus a half-million or better in Iraq, so there's justification.

And I really want some sworn testimony from Shrub over 9/11.

but the optics of an agency which requires us to hold records for 7 years behaving in this manner is frankly piss poor.

Financial and audit records are totally different from office functioning records, eg, identifying what the working hours are, vacation requests, etc.

From an external purely email standpoint, there is no way to tell without some metadata.

That's why I say, different kinds of records.

e-mails in 2 years?

I'd estimate 7-8 emails an hour, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year.

..is that it involves the IRS, which is not the most popular arm of government. I remember reading an article today bringing up the irony of what the IRS demands from citizens' record keeping and how long they themselves keep records. Stuff like that pisses people off, Rs and Ds alike, even if the parallels aren't as real or relevant as many would have you believe.

The story will get some traction but I've been rather surprised at how quickly Bergdahzi has faded from the front-page news, much to the chagrin of conservatives. The Repubs will try and milk the IRS story as much as they can and they may get a little venom but not their desperate wet-dream that the WH was somehow involved in it.

Unfortunately for Republicans things like, you know, real world events have been getting in the way recently to their narrative and it's not going their way. And they're stupid enough to be shooting themselves in the foot on this one: the more they try and accuse Obama of running Iraq (or other places) into the ground the more they expose themselves to their greatest weakness: jarring faded memories of the disastrous Iraq war and which party the American people overwhelmingly blames it on.

Could they once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by getting an electorate that is thinking back to 2006 more than 2010?

Crazy people, however, see the IRS destroying all the emails that detailed evidence of Obama putting chemtrails in the air that make people throw away their guns and gay marry blacks. Or whatever it is they whine about.

Joe spends an awful amount of the show's time beating that tired old drum to smithereens. He even had ole Ed Rendell on to tell him "you're right, joe."
