More U.S. Cubans Are Shifting To Democratic Party
First published June 24th 2014, 3:50 pm

The Republican party is losing support among U.S. Cubans as a growing number are shifting their support toward Democrats, according to a Pew Research Center analysis released on Tuesday.

Less than half (47 percent) of Cuban registered voters nationwide identified or were leaning toward the Republican Party, compared to 64 percent ten years ago. Meanwhile, the share of U.S. Cubans leaning or identifying with Democrats climbed doubled from 22 percent to 44 percent.

According to Pew Hispanic Research's Jens Manuel Krogstad, there is a generational shift in these numbers.

"The impact of younger Cubans is reflected in those figures. Over half (56%) of Cubans ages 18 to 49 identified with or leaned toward the Democratic Party compared with 39% of those 50 years and older,"said Krogstad.

...they sure held their grudge about the Bay of Pigs long enough. That debacle was their own fault, not Kennedy's.

It was largely missed in the media, but according to exit polls, Obama already won the Cuban American vote in Florida by 3 points in one of his presidential elections.

If they had reported it, the Republican's heads would have gone spinning around fast enough they'd come off.

They're rapidly descending into a regional party.

14. GOP viability in FL has recently been less about Miami Cubans...

and more about Jacksonville's white evangelical conservatives.

It's a red city in a red area in a place with nice weather, urban amenities and nearby beaches...it's GOP boomtown. When you see that J-ville is growing, know that it's all GOP retirees fleeing liberal Northeast states and looking to avoid the brown people further downstate in the cities.

You could give J-ville, the surrounding areas and the panhandle to the deep South states bordering it and Florida would no longer be close. Most Floridians would be thrilled too.

Its how many generations removed from leaving Cuba. The immigrants self-identify as Cubans, and vote solidly Republican. The next generation self-identify as Cuban-Americans, and vote mostly Republican. Following generations identify as Americans, and vote as other Hispanics.

So, in other words, a recent 20yo Cuban immigrant is going to vote as solidly republican as a Battista who came here in 1960.

and younger Cuban Americans care about a wider range of issues than the older generations.

Glad to hear this. There are multiple demographic factors that are causing Florida to move closer to the D side. Immigration and retirees are a few things affecting this. Most other latinos trend towards D.

16. The more they do that, the less reason there is to keep the embargo going

That was for a long time the deal between 1st generation Cuban-Americans and the GOP, IIRC.

Very interesting.

In any case, that embargo is about 30 years past its sell-by date and relations should be normalized.
