(6,960 posts)Are you relaying that at the funeral of the killed officer in NY that attending police are actually turning their backs on the Mayor -- during the service?
Is it on TV?
If that is the case ... then that is really, really in very poor taste and the NY police union is deserving of any and all contempt aimed at it.

(10,997 posts)some members of NYPD turned their backs. At least respect the family. They invited the Mayor

(6,960 posts)I'm one for vigorous protest, dissent, debate, etc.
But holy cow, that kind of behavior at a funeral for "one of their own" is disgusting and disrespectful.
Those that engaged in this display have got to be the most selfish of individuals ... I certainly would question their qualifications/character to be police officers.
My already low regard for police has just gotten lower.

(32,061 posts)The same goes for the asshole who flew the plane overhead towing a banner the other day, that expressing the same immature garbage. Don't expect things to change in NYC as long as this kind of shit keeps up.

(86,048 posts)I feel the same about the Secret Service. Housecleaning is required at this point. It's pretty obvious now.

(32,483 posts)Got into the WH. POTUS is not safe and neither is his family IMO.
DeBlasio is married to a bla person so he deserves the lack of respect in their eyes. These so called cops and SS either need to do the job or get the fuck out.
The challenging of civilian authority is the most frightening thing to me.
2naSalit
(86,048 posts)these folks have come to regard themselves as something unique and detached from the civil service they have actually been hired to perform. We need to fix that. Unfortunately, that will be a major shift that won't be well received by those who need to be addressed and they have guns and tanks now.
onecaliberal
(32,483 posts)The national guard should be called in to remove all of these people.
2naSalit
(86,048 posts)it may come to that. Should such a series of events take place, it will be required throughout the country and will be nasty in some places. But if that's what needs to happen then so be it. The only way change is going to happen is for change to actually happen. We have proven that we will tolerate certain kinds of violence, as a country, and I suspect that there will be much of it while change is taking place, sadly. I keep thinking, every time I hear of the latest atrocity, that this will be the last straw for a people in crisis. Seems like denial of the frog in the pot would illustrate how "things" are right now for some who have the luxury of ignorance by choice.

(32,483 posts)The frog in the pot analogy is perfect. Some days I fear a majority of this country are the frogs.

(3,183 posts)I've said it before and I'll say again that cops need to grow up. Maybe testing mental age along with more life experience.

(18,670 posts)have guns, and the backing of our judicial system. What a scary thought. This is disgusting. They all need to be purged out of the force.
On edit: by "purged", I mean have their asses fired, lest there is some freeper lurking about.

Shame on them for not behaving like supposedly grown ass people.
There's a time and a place.
They can protest later when it's convenient for everyone.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,355 posts)but I thought that the Police Union wanted DeBlasio to encourage a "cooling off" period and a respite in the protests, which he did (but probably shouldn't have IMHO) but now a bunch of Police Officers turn their backs on him- at a funeral for fallen officers no less? *ugh*
They are treating DeBlasio as though he pulled the trigger. It's disgusting what is going on among the Police Unions and some of the force.

(27,787 posts)The police want people to believe that it is their professionalism which ensures that they would never intentionally abuse their powers.
But then, while in uniform, they do this.
What it says is that they think they are above reproach and should never be questioned.
Which means that they really do need to be questioned and challanged more frequently, and with greater consequences.
