I am deeply saddened by the Umpqua tragedy, for one reason because my 18-year-old grandson, who attends a different community college in Oregon, just told me he's resigned to dying at the hands of a crazed gunman, and pretty much figures none of us is safe anywhere. He's a strong gun control advocate, but sees efforts to enact any legislation as futile. As I've done before, I apologized to him for the state of the world we've left him and his brother, my only grandchildren. Mostly I feel sick, tired and very, very sad.

Primary season should be about issues. But the personal attacks on supporters and candidates that we've seen make it difficult to not respond. Sanders, eg, is not a racist and neither are his supporters. But that has been the theme here for months by a small faction who now, thankfully have their own site to go to for this kind of thing. Hopefully that will lessen the nastiness here.

I take weekends off from reading here. By Monday, I'm no longer invested in whatever drama is happening, and it's easier to read along without getting tetchy.

Reading every single day for hours each day is liable to induce aneurysm. There's a reason a lot of time-outs come from high volume posters. People get too invested and lose perspective.

Random points

-The most salient point is that if you gave a blind ideological test the lion's share of the posters here would be closer to one another than to any conservative. Anecdotally when I take the I side Tests I score higher Green than Democrat.

-There is a lot of projection on both sides. Attributing the malice that resides in one's self to others.

-There is also a lot of narcissism of small differences,i.e., some posters magnify the small differences they have with other posters to maintain some sense of identity.

-Many threads like the "Bernie hates minorities and loves guns" threads are really stupid and lack all sense of proportion or nuance. Many threads like "Hillary hates gays and loves banksters and war" are equally lacking in proportion and nuance.

- I know my plea for comity will fall on deaf ears though I got to promote some discussion

Fri Oct 2, 2015, 12:24 PM
Oct 2015

Yes there is too much acrimony. I try to behave, but I'm guilty of it on occasion, when my dander gets up. Unfortunately, it is a negatuve feedback loop.

But there's also a bit too much condescending dismissiveness of people either by groups or individually. When people's legitimate opinions or concerns are treated as "Boy are they stupid" or "you're stupid" rather than healthy exchange of opinions. Which can sometimes add to the negative feedback loop. (There's a difference between that and good humored bantering.)

Again, guilty of that myself sometimes, though I try to keep it within the realm of good natured bantering.
