2016 Postmortem

So I'm listening to NPR this morning and they're echoing the new meme that gun control may be a defining issue in the Democratic primary. Gun control is finally an issue where Hillary Clinton and come in from the left of Bernie Sanders.
That means that Hillary comes in from the right on every other issue.
So, yeah, gun control is finally one issue where Hillary can come in from the left of Bernie.
That's the point.

(7,830 posts)Yet, for this progressive, I'm confident Bernie will push for exactly what he says he will~
As he has in recent days, Sanders cited several measures he can support, including a strengthened system of instant background checks, closure of the gun-show loophole, a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons designed strictly for killing human beings and far greater investments in mental health.
I trust him to say what he means.
I trust Clinton to say what is most politically advantageous at the moment. And the Clinton Media Machine to hop on board.

(14,733 posts)On MSNBC, it's often accompanied by a non-factual statement about how the NRA has supported Bernie for a long time. (Bernie has a D- rating from the NRA, which, I guess translates into 'support' in the minds of Hillary supporters. The hidden kernel of truth is that in one race, decades ago, the NRA 'supported' Bernie in order to beat a candidate they thought was slightly more anti-gun, assuming they could make Sanders a one-termer, to be replaced by someone who was unabashedly pro-gun. They failed in the second half of their plan.

(22,794 posts)Bernie did vote against holding gun manufacturers liable for crimes committed using their products.

(57,349 posts)And I support his vote on the PLCAA.
Gun manufacturers can still be sued if they break the law or make a defective product.
If their legally manufactured product is used to commit a crime they are not responsible.

(22,794 posts)A few days before Election Day in 1990, the National Rifle Association sent a letter to its 12,000 members in Vermont, with an urgent message about the race for the states single House seat. Vote for the socialist, the gun rights group said. Its important. "Bernie Sanders is a more honorable choice for Vermont sportsmen than Peter Smith, wrote Wayne LaPierre, who was and still is a top official at the national NRA, backing Sanders over the Republican incumbent.

(53,475 posts)... would be advocating and voting for giving GW Bush authority to go to war.
But I'm not a single-issue purist. Besides, Bernie comes closer to my positions on issues than any other Presidential candidate in my 67 years.

(57,349 posts)Bernie has always been 100% pro-choice all the way.
He trusts women to make their own decisions.
