Bernie Sanders to unveil sweeping labor bill

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is preparing to unveil sweeping union organizing legislation intended to endear himself to the labor community ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

The Democratic presidential candidate, who is battling Hillary Clinton for union support, will introduced legislation on Tuesday afternoon “to make it easier for workers to join together and bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions,” according to a press release from Sanders’s office.

Sanders is introducing the bill along with Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) in the House.

The legislation seems to mirror a similar workers’ rights bill introduced last month by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) that would increase penalties for companies that retaliate against workers for organizing.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a Democratic candidate making gains on front-runner Hillary Clinton, is working on his own bill to overhaul labor law.

Sanders pounced on a proposal unveiled last week by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican presidential hopeful known in his home state for his campaign against labor unions.

He assailed Walker’s plan to eliminate federal employee unions and dismantle the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), saying it “would lower wages and the benefits that working people receive while making the wealthy and large corporations even richer.”

This is a bill all Democrats should support.
