2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLabour is the Source of All Value. Electing Bernie Sanders is only step 1.
I highly recommend this video. Bernie opened the door to a discussion about economic populism. If our aim is a political revolution, we need to understand what Bernie means when he says we need a strong movement. And we don't have much time to get our act together with all the problems we're facing, the most catastrophic one being climate change.

And after all, support for human life is the direction in which we need to move.

(35,568 posts)I see Bernie as a strong decent step towards that provided we use that economic pivot to keep moving in a direction that betters life for the US AND for places where we used neoconservative and neoliberal tools to exploit their labor and expropriate their wealth leaving them in in utter desolation. If we don't demand our reps value the lives of workers they exploit overseas, what makes us thing they'll respect our exploited labor here?

(35,568 posts)That's a serious question by the way.
I'm not so sure that laborism would be enough because there are still other important -isms like racism, militarism, materialism that need to be dealt with but rewarding actual work properly has to happen here.

(62,325 posts)Theft of labor is what we are now witnessing. Massive theft and it is stunning that any Democrat would go along with that.
Bernie doesn't of course, as he said in the Debate, Wall St 'doesn't like me' with a smile.
Maybe that should be a litmus test of who is qualified to be POTUS.
If Wall St loves you enough to pour money into your campaign, there is a reason for that.
Great quote from Lincoln.
Thanks for the post Catherina

wrt to empowering the people, ALL the people.
What I don't get is how those who claim to care about Civil Rights are not interested in empowering minorities economically. In fact it's almost as if they want to suppress any discussion of Economic Justice for AAs.
Bernie of course is right. They don't agree with him that AAs must have equal access to economic justice. Shameful imo, and makes me wonder why???

(17,997 posts)The notion of it being played out is foreign to them. Literally and figuratively. Sorry, I said it badly.
Yes, Bernie gets it. But he's not a "pure" socialist. Which is a good thing. Balance is key. Right now, the scales aren't just tipped, they're completely broken.

Yes, step 1 is to elect Bernie Sanders a man who doesn't possess an elementary understanding of economics. Hearing him talk reminds me of the mindless chatter I heard at an OWS camp site back in 2011. "Hey man, we are oppressed because like, you know, we want free stuff."
Thankfully, Hillary will be our next president, and she does understand the importance of free markets.
