These are two of the syndicated columnists in my local newspaper, like most in this country once independent and now owned and directed by a company trading in fear and nostalgia (lots of high school football and support for cops.)
Yesterday Krauthammer caricatured Bernie Sanders as "wild, wavy and loud," seeking to diminish and marginalize him while confidently proclaiming Hillary Clinton the nominee. Today's column by Charen, titled "Democratic Party: Not for grown-ups," spends much more time on Bernie, calling him "Santa Claus with a Brooklyn accent" and trotting out the long-discredited Wall Street Journal figure of $18 trillion. The piece devolves into a screed in which we've "been smothered in quasi-socialism for the past six years. The U.S. economy desperately needs a shot of capitalism and growth."
It's happening, Folks! While Krauthammer is still stuck at "Then they make fun of you," Mona Charen has moved firmly into "Then they fight you."
This is not 1971, although had the Internet existed back then we could now have a very different world. This is 2015, and the right and wrong sides of history are becoming clear right before us. Stay awake, stay strong - and if you're still defending the 20th Century status quo, think about changing - and fighting the good fight.

(9,822 posts)These are largely the folks who don't rely on the 'Net for their info. They're dying out, but not fast enough to effect the change we need through demographics alone.

(30,717 posts)I read two local papers. I subscribe to one. So do many people younger than me. It is how we get our local news, which is much needed. Like many people here, we get the bulk of our info from the Internet, but still need local news.

Oh, were we talking about something that he said? Frankly, I can't watch nor listen to it so I can't have any informed opinion.

(22,271 posts)Our local paper used to carry her, then, when Princess Diana was killed in the auto accident, she wrote a column saying, basically, that if she would have been home taking care of her children like she was supposed to, she wouldn't have died. So, I guess, if you're a mom, you're never ever allowed to go anywhere without your children. Shortly after that, they stopped carrying her. The woman is a piece of work.

(9,822 posts)I suspect this is the case all over small-town America, just as it is with AM radio.

(11,366 posts)They only hear right-wing talk radio and they're only given right-wing editorials in their local newspapers.
I've often said the red/blue divide isn't the Mason-Dixon line: it's the city/county line.
The fact is the South has more rural voters than city voters, so our states vote "red." Look at Pennsylvania. If it were not for the very large cities of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, that state would be red, too.

(9,822 posts)My hope is that the truth and simplicity of Bernie's message will withstand the organized attack from the establishment, and that people will understand That his election is not sufficient, but necessary to begin the transformational process that is our only chance.

(16,371 posts)Rural people are polled just as frequently as urbanites. Other than the flat out religious crazies, they're among the 85-90% of Americans who believe that everyone deserves healthcare, that fairness is.important, that the filthy rich.0001% should pay more in taxes than the struggling working and once-upon-a-time middle class, That corporations should keep jobs.in the USA and not in China, Vietnam or Indonesia. They're still the salt of the earth folks they've always been, but 40 years of constant brainwashing has all-too-often succeeded in warping how they view the world. Not all rural voters, of course, but too many of them.

(11,366 posts)I know a lot of rural salt-of-the-earth people who really have to think about it when you phrase things the way you do. Sadly, too often, however, they still fall back on the God, Gays and Guns arguments because it's all they've been told for decades.

(12,530 posts)It sounds like your local paper is giving time to both sides of the story--old-style rob-you-blind Republicans and loudmouthed shiny-object-social-issue-screaming Republicans.

(58,785 posts)starts using his name with the same loathing hiss as Hillary's, I'll know they're really afraid of him. If they eventually start ignoring Hillary to make up insulting variations of "Bernie" and rant constant filthy aspersions about his religion and politics, well...about then I'll be planning to vote for him for president.
Post from a particularly nasty little forum where this progress can be easily monitored. It's supposedly an industry forum but has very low standards and draws outsiders who appreciate a place where they can give their hostility and bigotry pretty free reign:
"In Reply to: Fuming Bernie supporters: Why is CNN deleting our - comments? "This is entertaining, bettr than the Sunnis and Shi'ites going - after ech other! I might have to go over to DU and stir up some trouble. I am guessing it's because the typical Bernie supporter cant get to his second sentence without dropping an F-bomb based on things I've read myself."
See? Bernie's at stage I there, still has way to go. But at least the hostile right have him on their radar.

(11,366 posts)That's a really odd blog, there.

(58,785 posts)the forum allows a great deal of right-wing hostility not allowed elsewhere, and credentials are not required, so outsiders come there to act out. Some have undoubtedly been blocked from other political sites altogether and have found a home there.
BTW, the transcription industry is dying and its people grossly underpaid and otherwise abused. This whole website is known as something of a sewer, avoided by dignified people and those still doing okay, but it's really the only gathering place for people who want to complain to others in their boat and to look for jobs postings. I'm in a different medical line of work, which is how I know about this site.
There are some decent people trying to hold the line on the politics forum, but I drop in strictly for a quick idea of what the far right is saying -- unedited. Last time I looked must have been in 2014 because some were calling for armed military on the border to stop refugee children from entering the U.S. and infecting us all with their diseases. Oh, and of course to stop hoards of terrorists hiding among them. And this site is where I discovered the social right was truly outraged by Michelle suggesting we feed our children salad.
Makes DU look almost genteel, doesn't it?
