Hillary Clinton Goes to Militaristic, Hawkish Think Tank, Gives Militaristic, Hawkish Speech

Hillary Clinton Goes to Militaristic, Hawkish Think Tank, Gives Militaristic, Hawkish Speech
Glenn Greenwald
The Intercept
Sep. 9 2015

Leading Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton this morning delivered a foreign policy speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington. By itself, the choice of the venue was revealing.

Brookings served as Ground Zero for centrist think tank advocacy of the Iraq War, which Clinton (along with potential rival Joe Biden) notoriously and vehemently advocated.

So the hawkish Brookings is the prism through which Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy worldview can be best understood. The think tank is filled with former advisers to both Bill and Hillary Clinton, and would certainly provide numerous top-level foreign policy officials in any Hillary Clinton administration. As she put it today at the start: “There are a lot of long-time friends and colleagues who perch here at Brookings.” And she proceeded to deliver exactly the speech one would expect, reminding everyone of just how militaristic and hawkish she is.

... Clinton repeatedly invoked the Netanyahu-cartoon image of Iran as a Grave and Evil Terrorist Menace. This was her formulation of the issue she seeks to address: “how to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and more broadly, how to protect ourselves and our allies from the full range of threats that Iran poses.” She even compared the country to the Supreme Villain of the Moment: “Iran, like ISIS, benefits from chaos and strife.”

She vowed that in dealing with Iran, she will be tougher and more aggressive than Reagan was with the Soviet Union: “You remember President Reagan’s line about the Soviets: Trust but verify? My approach will be distrust and verify.” She also explicitly threatened Iran with war if they fail to comply: “I will not hesitate to take military action if Iran attempts to obtain a nuclear weapon, and I will set up my successor to be able to credibly make the same pledge.” She even depicted the Iran Deal as making a future war with Iran easier and more powerful:

Should it become necessary in the future having exhausted peaceful alternatives to turn to military force, we will have preserved and in some cases enhanced our capacity to act. And because we have proven our commitment to diplomacy first, the world will more likely join us.

I guess actively supporting the world's worst crime this century isn't enough to disqualify someone from becoming the President of the United States, in some people's mind. That's really sad.

opportunity are remarkably silent about REAL racism, our deadly racist Foreign Policies which certainly ARE noted by those who actually care about these issues and don't just scream about them during election season.

Our FP could not be more racist if we tried. Enough already with these wars for profit and destroying nations and cultures we have no right doing.

10. You're right: I've noticed people using the race card or going after racists

that are far less racists than those that conduct or support our foreign policy, and they themselves support our foreign policy. It's so bizarre.

Our racism against brown Muslims is so severe that the bigots see nothing wrong with it, going so far as supporting mass-murder against them.

12. If you are silent about the horrors of our wars for profit, you ARE racist imo.

If you support War Hawks, knowing what they have already done, you are a racist imo.

And no it's not just outspoken bigots such as those on the Right who supported Bush's madness in Iraq. They were open about it, using racial epithets for Muslims in general including some of our Generals. I would post some of them, but prefer to leave them in the gutter where they belong.

It is also those who support politicians on these awful wars IF they are THEIR politicians.

Libya eg, was a war crime in action from start to now and again, it was an African nation with its own culture and goals for their future. We claimed to be 'saving' people when in reality all we wanted was to stop them from using their own resources for their own purposes.

Once that was accomplished, well, look at that country today.

Would the same people even think of destroying a nation as that has been if it was NOT an African or ME nation?

She was on board with the agenda of the Bush neocons.

And she hasn't changed.
