American Democratic Socialism should be about this: fairness
It should be that out of fairness, everyone should have access to healthcare and food and adequate education and a roof over their head, and that, similar to what Obama said, that if you are a good worker, you deserve to make enough money to support yourself and your family, to have a decent life, and that you deserve to be able to enjoy your life (by not having to work so many hours as to not be able to be with your family), and not have to live your life in fear (as in not having to worry that you might not be able to find another job if your job is deemed unneeded in the future and you wouldn't be able to afford the education needed to retrain.) No one should have to be punished by being on the street or in inadequately funded homeless shelters just because of an unfortunate turn of events. No one should have to suffer just to allow someone else to live an opulent lifestyle. It should be not about equal outcomes, but fair outcomes.
Instead of government doing all it can to stimulate the market, even if all the gains go to the 1%, government focuses on the people first rather than Wall Street. Government should do everything it can possibly do to ensure this to the American people, in a sort of "21st century deal" akin to the New Deal.
