2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumEven the more moderate arms of the MSM collude in conveying the idea that Hillary
is calculating and inauthentic. And I think her being a powerful, serious woman has a lot to do with it. She can't be as smart and capable as she seems. It must all be an act.
For example, in the report below, the writer describes Hillary as "conveying an image of being more composed and serious" and says she "sought to project an image of composure and authority" -- instead of simply saying that she remained composed and serious throughout the long, grueling day.
OTOH, they dropped the "image" formulation completely when they described her in negative terms, as when reporting that she responded "testily" to a question and "snapped."
So they subtly impart the idea that Hillary seeks to convey a positive image, but when the inauthentic mask drops, out comes her testiness and her snapping.

If one of Clintons goals was to convey an image of being more composed and serious than her inquisitors, members of the committee often appeared to help, engaging in one high-decibel shouting match and numerous partisan jabs.
SNIP
Late in the evening, Clinton, hoarse and visibly tired, responded testily to comments by Gowdy questioning the independence of a Benghazi review led by Thomas Pickering, a retired diplomat, and Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I will not sit here and hear that, she snapped, accusing Gowdy of impugning their reputations.
But during most of her testimony, Clinton sought to project an image of composure and authority, challenging the committee in her opening statement to reach for statesmanship in its long-running inquiry.

(55 posts)"Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said that when it comes to fixing Social Security, putting everything on the table is not an answer. Raising the retirement age is not an answer. Cutting benefits is not an answer. This article incorrectly summarizes her as saying cutting benefits or raising the eligibility age were off the table."

(80,708 posts)They can call it whatever they want, but some things can't be spun. She looked poised, professional and smart, and they looked dumber than a bag of rocks and nuttier than squirrel shit.

(33,688 posts)By every account, she handed them their asses and showed herself at her best. She expertly and coolly took down a mountain of bullshit while making the Repigs look like the poo-flinging monkeys they are and for that she deserves great credit. Seeing someone actually stand up to these hammerheads and take them down was great. We haven't seen much of that the last 6+ years.
That does not mean I trust her with the economy or war/peace. I didn't two days ago and I don't today.

(12,655 posts)must get under some peoples skin, but one can be a woman and calculating/inauthentic. the idea that they are mutually exclusive is as gender biased as the idea that they have to coexist.

(108,955 posts)in promoting the idea that she is always phony. She is never what she seems, in their reporting.
Even in this case they just can't get themselves to simply say she was calm and composed -- which she clearly was. They have to frame it in terms of her only presenting an image of being calm and composed -- as if she wasn't.

(12,655 posts)but that sounds like the old "women are always hysterical" meme, or hysterical on the inside in this case (what you described from msm)
if that is what they are selling, then jeez, they have a few centuries of catching up to do. i hear psychology today is readable at a 9th grade level, perhaps they could grab a few issues......
