2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumYeah, I know, a “President Trump” can’t happen.
The same thing was said about Reagan and George W. Bush. But Reagan got elected twice and W. served one appointed term and one stolen term.
So do you really believe we couldnt end up with a President Trump?
Face it. There are many millions of ignorant people (and too many who should know better) who are buying into Trumps P.T. Barnum act of the 21st century.
At some point, America ran off the rails. I dont know whether it was the Sarah Palin craziness, or the fact that a black man named Obama was elected president twice, or the 24/7 propaganda of the right wing, or the hate, ignorance and fear that has always existed in the ugly underside of America, or a combination of all of them.
We are living in a country in which:
O Racial profiling and police brutality are the norm
O Voter suppression is out of the closet and in full bloom
O One political party talks about killing Social Security and Medicare
O Planned Parenthood is under siege by religious fanatics
O Shooting massacres have become a weekly norm
O The middle class has been destroyed with barely a whimper
O Virtually every U.S. Senator is a millionaire
O Democrats bitch, but dont turn out for mid-term elections
O Women are still second class citizens in hundreds of ways
O Privatization has replaced responsible government
O More people are imprisoned than in any other country in the world
O Congress is bought, paid for, and wont regulate air, water or food
O Our infrastructure is crumbling beneath us, over us and under us
O Is our children learning? Spoken by George W. Bush, Jan. 11, 2000
O Were not going to give up on destroying the health care system for the American people. Paul Ryan March 12, 2013
Do you really believe America couldnt/wouldnt elect a boorish, ignorant, narcissist named Donald Trump? -- Not to mention someone like Carson, Cruz, or virtually any other member of their very strange group of candidates who actually believe the garbage they are saying, or are playing to the lowest common denominator.

(17,469 posts)especially as "We the People" can't be bothered to vote, or be properly informed, or think critically.
Yes, a lot has been done to stack the deck, but it still comes back to Americans being too lazy to think and/or vote.

(99,708 posts)That's what happened in 012.
Trust me, Trump will not be the nominee...It's more likely than not he will be out before the SEC primary.

(15,027 posts)Nixon lost to Kennedy in 1960. In 1962, Nixon ran for governor of California and lost. He lashed out at the press saying something like "Now you won't have Nixon to kick around anymore." Google it.
It seems that people back then thought they were rid of Nixon once and for all. But the Dick came back in 1968 to fuck up America with his "Southern Strategy" which has been with us ever since.

(7,143 posts)When I was too young to understand, my dad told me that Nixon was the most crooked Congressman he'd ever met - and that he'd met quite a few. He was in a rage when Nixon was elected, but it certainly wasn't unsurprising. He'd been a Congressman, Senator and two-term Veep and Kennedy's victory over him was narrow.
In recent history, the best comparison to Trump would be George Wallace. Of course, the Dixiecrats were still a strong voting bloc, so Wallace's run peeled off a lot of Democratic votes. By contrast, a Trump third-party run (which seems quite plausible) would be the death knell of the Republican Party's national ambitions.
