(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Corporations spend millions billions buying our elected representatives because they know this. Active participation is a minimum requirement for good government that is responsive to the needs of the people.
A government of the people, by the people, and for the people requires the full involvement and participation of the people. We can't even get a decent percentage of voter participation from many of our apathetic, lethargic, whining consumers 'citizens,' who can't even pay attention if they're not being entertained with banalities.
The fascists know this, which is why they are so heavily invested in lobbying for their own interests. Their consortium is fully focused on buying our country out from under us -- ensuring that all resources, including people, are fully-owned commodities for their own power and profit.
Yes, I harp on this theme. Deal with it.
I've argued with "Govt.=bad" spielers with:
"Yes, it's bad when it gets hijacked by crony corruption; it isn't in the national or the public interest to have 30 to 40 corporate lobbyists for each member of Congress, or to have a tax structure that sent $30T to off-shore shelters, or to let the infrastructure deteriorate, or to have private prisons that demand occupancy, or any other of several dozen examples concerning wars, trade, patent abuse, gouging by health insurers, or shady banking. They have grabbed the reins, so to speak, and none of that gets better if we let them have their way even more completely.
I say when corporations abuse the country, they are breaking their charter. Bad acts by imaginary/artificial citizens is the source of bad government."

(8,401 posts)I like this out of the list of rebuttals to typical RW government is bad talking points:
"Government is not simply a provider of services, it is a collective moral endeavor that enable us to promote the common good. It is a public space in which we debate moral questions and try to decide on what is good for society. The market cannot perform this function it is not an ethical enterprise."
