On Quvenzhané Wallis

And I think that we need to take these two "jokes" together and discuss their full impact. [If you need a primer on why "cunt" is a problematic word and a terrible slur, Melissa has one.]

Quvenzhané Wallis is 9.

Joking about a 9-year-old black girl hooking up with George Clooney is INAPPROPRIATE. She was in the fucking audience. 40 million people were watching. It was the biggest night of her life. Her nomination was historic because of her age. But it was also a nomination for a black actress, something that is still rare in Hollywood. And MacFarlane used her to make a joke about how George Clooney likes to date young women.

But the context of these "jokes" is so much larger than the Oscars, MacFarlane, Hollywood, the Onion, or Twitter.

Wallis is a young black girl in a country with a horrific history of racism and sexual exploitation of young black girls.

She's a young black girl in a country with a horrific history of racism and sexual exploitation of young black girls. Because - AND I CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH - black women's bodies have been sexually exploited, used, disparaged FOR CENTURIES. That's great for you if that history doesn't mean anything to you but that doesn't mean that history isn't real and isn't present now. The fact that you don't have to engage with that history when MacFarlane or the Onion "jokes" just means you're lucky. (Also, what Shelby Knox tweeted.)

I posting this because I've seen how our fellow our upstanding DUers, refer to the Oscars incident as 'boobagedden'. (Cute, that-- did you think that up all by your bad selves?) the story of this little girl has gotten lost. It would drop like a rock anywhere else, and though I know there's already a thread, I liked this article as well.

So, to the feminist police, men and women alike, who like to Lurk and giggle, have at it. I've figured we have a fan base here, since this group is referenced as often as it is.

Go ahead; Show the combination of your false 'progressive' values in a combination of racism and sexism. Go right ahead. Refute this; call out the 'word police' explain how this is really ok. Use Clever snark and silly little graphics.

Or is it tiresome already? Too bad.

4. The amount of porn and exploitation speak enough of the shallowness that's accepted in our society.

Young girls committ suicide often due to their "less than perfect" looks. Has anyone really given one shit about this??? No. They are too busy drooling at the titty bars. Sad state of affairs when nudity is so taboo that tongues are hanging out of mouths at every glimpse of a bare body.

I believe Ms. Wallace has more upstairs than many of her adult peers. She'll be fine. She probably laughed, too.

Hm.

Anyway, to bring the issue of porn on topic, its worth noting how disgustingly racist porn can be.

I'd love to see it posted in GD, then they can all be seen in the same place. They'd get to show their asses to a much bigger audience.

6. I think the author is wrong to insert race into this

This kind of race based feminism can't be good for the movement.

I thought the clooney joke and the boob song were both stupid and crossed the line. First, you just don't use a 9 year old to tee up a joke about a sexual relationship. Second the boob song referenced rape scenes not just boob shots in a movie, for me that was extremely wrong.

Fwiw I think men and women are objectified frequently in movies, though it does occur more with women. But please don't tell me that women don't like seeing guys naked butts in movies and the ass shots are just as pointless as the boob shots.

I'm ashamed to say I didn't even notice the difference in discourse. I'd like to blame that on the fact that there was discussion of the horrible way she was treated in the feminist groups I'm in on Facebook, but that isn't it. There simply wasn't as much discussion on it.

I wish I'd shared this here when I read it. I was too busy arguing wirh the cantyoutakeajokeitwassatireabouttheindustryblahblahfuckinblah crap in GD.

10. The girl is nine years old

NINE. That is something that i think should be kept in the spotlight, and trump everything else.

Why?

Because Hollywood has a track record of taking children of both sexes and ruining their lives.

It is one thing for a Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep to be insulted. No, it is NOT good, but they are grown adults, who have already developed a sense of self, and who have avenues available to them, up to and including leaving Hollywood for something better.

This C-H-I-L-D cannot. Hell, she has not even hit puberty yet, which means that some 14-18 year old is going to be teased about being called a (you know what word) as she develops, which is a good way of making sure she never develops properly.

Yes, there are happy endings, but also a lot of bad ones. Yes, Drew Barrymore is doing fine now, but there were a few moments where an early grave or jail cell was ready and waiting for her.

And no, this is not to discount the feminism, indeed, being that Q is a young, afro-american female, she is already very vulnerable. However, in all the heat,I wondered how come no one talked about the fact that a NINE year old gets hit with the sort of punch that makes 30 year olds slit their wrists?
