I can write the script for what happens next. A number of rappers whod rather get a feature on a Ross record than do the right thing will be awkwardly silent about the issue. The White boy rap writers who have so much to do with the relevance of Ross will remain mum as well. Outspoken advocates for womens right-to-be-human will be outspoken. Folks will tweet Father your sons and find a way to blame Black single moms for the whole thing. A reminder that women buy rap records, so really, this is our entire fault anyway. And there will be the standard note that Parents raise kids, rap does not raise kids.
...
Whats so scary about Ross line is that this is something that a good number of men and boys actually do. Maybe a rap lyric wont inspire an impressionable young dude to go and try to flip a couple keys, but normalizing this sort of rape? I see it. I see it and it scares me.
...
This is not just another terrible rap lyric to be dismissed. This is an important teachable moment for young men, boys and even some full-grown adults who dont understand consent. Who dont understand that yes, even the girl who brought the molly and the Magnums to the party can be a victim if she was not able to decide when and how they were used. THIS IS RAPE CULTUREthe global reality that was dismissed as a feminist talking point by so many men on this very site just recently.

(41,968 posts)There's been rape lyrics in rap before. I'm glad somebody is getting some pushback on it.
I like the smackdown in the first paragraph

(13,324 posts)The fact that he now raps about supposedly being a drug lord amuses me. What's not so amusing, however, are the lines quoted in the OP.

(36,424 posts)they don't care what kind of character their sports/movie/music heroes have - if they are good at something, that's all that matters & they will support them.
Good thing we never go to any company functions.

(41,968 posts)Speaking on radio station Q93.3, he says, "There are certain things you can't Tweet and certain things you want people to hear and I want to make sure this is clear... woman is the most precious gift known to man (sic). You understand.
"There was a misunderstanding with a lyric or a misinterpretation. The term rape wasn't used. I would never use the term rape in my records. Hip-Hop don't (sic) condone that, the streets don't condone that. Nobody condones that. I just want to reach out to all the queens on my timeline, the beautiful ladies that were reaching out to me... we don't condone rape and I'm not with that."

(13,324 posts)So at best, it's more "muddying of the waters" that helps no one and potentially harms many.

(41,968 posts)I also like rap and comedy, although in rap I like powerful social messages in rap, in comedy I like a strong sense of the ironical. That being said I quit paying attention to both some in mainstream some time ago. So I'm no expert.
You're exactly right; muddying the waters is what he did, and he missed what could have been 'a teaching moment' not that I expected different from hm

(115,103 posts)So of course he went on the defensive, and ignored all those women whose opinions he fools himself into thinking he actually values.
Goddess forbid he actually recognized his own complicity in reinforcing rape culture.
