Please explain this to me about self censorship because I do not

Last edited Sat Jun 21, 2014, 12:59 AM - Edit history (1)

Understand. As far as I know everyone over the age of two self censors themselves. I do know some elderly people with dementia who have lost this filtering skill and are incapable of recognizing/respecting boundaries.

I lack an adequate filter between my brain and mouth, but I have been working on it. Still, my non-censored self doesn't use the words at the center of this recent kerfuffle.

I think this whole incident is yet another example of privilege and entitlement. They feel entitled to use words than insult women, LGBT, and people of color. Yet if anyone mentions age, malcontents, or white men, and all hell breaks loose.

But to rally behind it as a worthy cause ... ? As if to aspire to be two years old is the epitome of society and something we should strive for ... ?

And the mental gymnastics some are executing to justify it are hilarious.

Is not that he didn't mean it in "that way" but precisely that he did mean it in "that way." There is no disconnect here.

Kurt Vonnegut said it very nicely: "We are what we pretend to be. So we must be careful about what we pretend to be." You can take that as saying we become what we pretend or what we pretend is exactly what we always have been. I choose the latter.

It isn't about how the usage of this word gives birth to corruption and abuse. It's that underneath the usage of the word there already exists the corruption and abuse. I think that is the surest way to explain why there is no way to jokingly use epithets.

In GD about self censorship. TRP started it all, yes.
But, that premise about self censoring being wrong makes no sense to me.

We all self-censor. It's not remarkable, or special, or noteworthy. It's just part of being a decent human being.

It's like having to explain to a 5 year old why pointing out the scars on that mans face is not polite. Or why that lady is so short. Children, who are curious, and are developing filters learn from adults. I'm willing to bet the people tossing around the word "censorship" who are parents have experienced this.

I bet they use words like "polite" and "nice". I'm also willing to bet they don't want their children growing up and tossed in jail for hate crimes.

But it had some convoluted logic about promoting self censorship is self censorship.. I've trashed most of them.

I don't argue much with those people, unless I think they're smart and have something to say, and feel like working it out of them. Which I usually don't.

They are misusing the word censorship with misplaced indignation. This is what bugs me-- it could be a great conversation. But it's thread after thread of nonsense.

I just looked and it's only 7 I've trashed-- felt like a lot more-- whoops 8 now

Hard to have a great conversation with someone who doesn't understand the meaning of the words they are using.

Might be a Long Summer if this is any indication.

Like RedQueen said-- we all self censor. I think they think that they are being told what to do. Not the point.

I have the book "Cunt: A Declaration of Independence", which I enjoy very much. Not to "take back" the word, but to understand the historical context and own the word. As some of our UK posters have pointed out, over there, it's usage is more common and less offensive, probably the equivalent of "cooze"or "twat" over here -- which doesn't make it less sexist-- although it's applied to men as well, much like "bitch" is applied to men over here.

It's still insults based on women's sexuality-- not so much the genitals themselves but what we do with them. Who, what and how often. That's when it gets offensive. Likes Lioness la Prianka's thread on the word "pussy" the words imply an inferiority, and thus men maintain sexual entitlement

I love all words. I really do. I want the freedom to use any and all words if and when needed, I have them at my command. I know their definition and will use them in context to elicit a desired effect with whomever I am communicating.

If I want/choose to offend, trust me, I can and I will.

However, most of the time, I choose to be a gentle, kind, warm, respectful person because I have found that generally what a person gives is what a person receives back.

Why would I choose to send negative energy out into the universe only to have it return back to me tenfold ... ?

It is illogical to me.

Illogical = good word.

Thank you, ism.

Peace.
